Pool of London

On a Friday afternoon, Tower Bridge opens for the Dunbar as she arrives from Rotterdam to enter the Upper Pool of the River Thames in London.

With the ship safely through the open bridge, a semaphore traffic signal rises allowing vehicles to cross. Tower Bridge crossing the Thames from Bermondsey SE1 to the Borough of Stepney E1.

Customs Officers head for the story's Battle Bridge Wharf where the Dunbar is about to dock. Seen from the Rotherhithe bank, this is the Upper Pool of the Thames with Tower Bridge and the Tower of London in the distance.

Lines are thrown ashore from the Dunbar. The vessel playing the Dunbar was a refrigerating ship built by Gotaverken Shipyards and launched as MV California Express in 1934, being renamed Czech in 1949 before being broken up at Gdansk in 1965. Ray identifies the Dunbar as about to moor at Mark Brown's Wharf, looking west towards London Bridge and St. Paul's Cathedral. Today the location is known as Potters Field Park. (RL)

When approached by Mr. Andrews (Michael Golden), the Captain (George Merritt) advises that he's carrying a general cargo with no passengers, there's no infection and the Crew's declarations are ready in the saloon. Tower Bridge graces the background.

Following another Hand, Harry (Leslie Phillips), Dan MacDonald (Bonar Colleano) and Johnny Lambert (Earl Cameron) leave the Dunbar after making their customs declarations. Looking across the river from Potters' Fields with the tower of the Trinity House on Tower Hill to the top left of centre and the Tower of London on the right.

Trinity House now overshadowed by many a taller building. SJ.

Harry jumps on board a departing tram as it pulls away from the stop. A tram on route 70 in Tooley Street SE1 says Marc Maitland. And Ian Hadley adds that this is the London Bridge station (Tooley Street)' terminus of the route which lay just before the junction of Duke Street Hill.

The shot pans with the tram as Harry takes a seat next to an attractive young Woman. Facing south-east on Tooley Street.

Leaving a pub after a beer, the two pals head to the theatre where Dan is to meet Mike and hand over drugs hidden in cigarette packets. This is Poplar High Street, with the now demolished Queen's Theatre to the right. Richard Lovejoy found a good description of the theatre, both inside and out, at http://www.theatrestrust.org.uk/search?q=queens+poplar&type=all which would suggest that the interior was also used for location shooting.

Phil Evans returned to Poplar High Street and faced west towards the junction with Cotton Street and Preston Road.

While Dan is approached by acrobat Vince Vernon who enquires about when his ship sails, Johnny walks away from the theatre in the rain after the Commissionaire takes a dislike to him. Mick Lemmerman identifies this as East India Dock Road in Poplar E14 with the New Pavilion Cinema to the right. The cinema became the Essoldo in 1956 and closed ten years later to become a bingo club before demolition in 1990.

Looking east down East India Dock Road taken by Phil Evans who adds "I realised when looking at the screen capture that the big clue to this location is the old main gate of the East India Dock which you can just about make out through the darkness. I think the gate was demolished in the 60s as part of the expansion of the Blackwall tunnel and redevelopment of the northern approach road. My shot is from as close as I could get to the angle from a refuge in the middle of the road."

Johnny takes a place at the back of the queue just as Pat, the theatre cashier, catches up with him before the pair go into a Milk Bar to shelter when the bus arrives already full. Ray also identifies this location, outside 233 East India Dock Road, opposite Cotton Street, a row of shops that survive to this day. (RL)

Dan makes his way to call on his girlfriend Maisie. Richard Lovejoy is of the opinion that this is Blackwall Way in E14. The sign reads "Kitson's" who were Thermal Insulation Contractors at 19 to 23 Blackwall Way and the stairs to the left of the capture are clearly shown on the 1947-1964 OS Map forming the entrance to number 15.

Phil Evans explains "The construction of the A1261 Aspen Way bisected Blackwall Way, so this shot is taken looking south along what is now Prestage Way. When the film was shot, Blackwall Way went over the railway system for the docks, now Blackwall DLR station is elevated above street level. The former Midland Railway hydraulic pumping station on Duthie Street, visible in the right distance, still stands as a Majestic wine warehouse."

In a café, Jock the proprietor, Alf and Mike discuss their cut from safe cracking job that Vince Vernon's brother Charlie is planning. Ray Glenister quite rightly points out that this is Deacon Street, SE5 as the café and shop parade is seen in the background of Capture 42. (RL)

Deacon Street has moved to the north but this is where the original ran through the building to the left. I've stepped back a bit just south of where The Star (as in cap42) was to try to put it in context. SJ

Getting off a later bus, Johnny walks Pat (Susan Shaw) to the corner near her home. Poplar, London E14.The couple are in Salmons Lane as are the derelict terraces behind them, (123 to 129). On the left, the eastern end of Parnham Street which leads into Rhodeswell Road. (RL)

Phil Evans wandered around what has become the Locksley Estate for this and the following four shots.

Johnny apologises for making Pat late. Ray and Ron Glenister have, after all their years of involvement, resolved the location to be the Vulcan beer house on the junction of Salmon Lane, Galt Street and Parnham Street in Poplar E14 with Rhodeswell Road in the right background.

Pat asks is Johnny lives on the boat when it's in port. The corner of Salmon Lane and Parnham Street with Galt Street in the centre background located by Ray and Ron.

Phil Evans advises that redevelopment of the area began in 1955.

Johnny explains he looks forward to being on shore but is quite glad to get back to work at sea but tonight had been different. Ray and Ron Glenister found the Vulcan on the corner of Galt Street and Parnham Street E14.

Kicking a can along the street, Johnny heads back to the Dunbar. Shad Thames SE1, seem extensively in many productions including 'The French Lieutenants Woman', 'Clegg', 'Give My Regards To Broad Street', 'Terry On The Fence', 'License to Kill' and 'The Alf Garnett Saga'.

Johnny turns a corner and boards the ship. Ray points out that Johnny has the warehouses of Mark Brown's Wharf behind him before rounding on to the wharf and jetty where the Dunbar is moored. (RL)

Saturday morning dawns. Southwark Bridge crosses the Thames to the left with Vintry House on Queen Street Place EC4 behind. Dating from 1930, Vintry House was demolished in the 1980s and Vintners Place now occupies the site.

John Harwood admits this is from the wrong side but does point out that it's London Bridge. (SJ)

A Thames River Police launch patrols the river.

On the launch, a Sergeant (Russell Waters) spots that a barge alongside the Dunbar has an illegible registration number. The Upper Pool of the Thames near Potters' Fields.

A busier time on my return after 16 years. SJ

Dan enters the offices of the Amalgamated Steamship Company to hand over the ships papers to Sally, Harry's girlfriend. The long demolished offices were part of Irongate Wharf, St. Katherine's Way in E1.

This kept SJ stumped for ages: was it set dressing? An Insurance Plan of London dated May 1924 shows Irongate Wharf butted against Tower Bridge. RL advises that a contemporaneous shot from 1951 can be seen on the excellent website www.alondonhinheritance.com (April 2016).

As he leaves the office, a Girl Selling Flags in aid of Merchant Seamen stops Dan . . . who buys one. Tower Bridge. looking north with the warehouses on the west side of St. Katherine Docks in the background. The site can be seen in ‘To The Devil, a Daughter’.

After Dan tells Harry that Sally waited for him the previous evening, he sets off to meet her. Shad Thames in SE1 again.

The couple walk away together making plans for a night of dancing at the Palais. Simon suggests Bankside as that is the dome of St. Paul's Cathedral on the other side of the river and Les Stitson adds "Bankside between Southwark Bridge, which is crossing the background, and Cannon Street railway bridge, which is behind the camera.

Despite the discussion in the screen shot caption, the place is rather more tourist friendly now. (RL)

While he fills a Ford Anglia's tank with petrol, a Pump Attendant asks Pat if she's going cycling tomorrow. Borough High Street SE1 with the Red Lion public house on the corner of Great Suffolk Street to the left.

Now, looking north-east by David Neicho who advises that the garage in was redeveloped in the mid-2000s adding in the distance can be made out the church of St. George the Martyr which stands at the corner of Borough High Street and Long Lane.

I deliberately, perhaps ill-advisedly, stood in the road to capture St George, now dwarfed by The Shard. To the left, the Red Lion which became Ruse was demolished in 2016 and replaced with more flats. SJ

As she passes on her way to work, Pat tells the young Man that she'll be there for the trip to Epping. The garage at the corner of Borough High Street and Great Suffolk Street.

Rather bland. SJ

Pat crosses to the theatre where she bumps into Johnny as he leaves after taking a message to Mr. Vernon from Dan. Facing the Queen's Theatre at numbers 275 to 279 Poplar High Street in E14 confirmed by Adrian Grepnold.

Phil Evans explains that this was also the location of the Robin Hood Gardens Estate, the western building of which has already made way for the new block on the corner with Cotton Street. The eastern block of Robin Hood Gardens is currently being demolished.

When Maisie walks out on him, Dan finds Sally alone at the Palais and walks her home after a few pink gins. Tanner Street SE1, looking towards Dockhead.

Now. The houses on the right in the original photo were demolished when the road was widened in the 1970s. Not only "in the dark and briefly" but once again David Neicho is spot on! Fantastic, Well done. Thanks.

Footsteps echo in the street outside Jock's café where plans are finalised for the heist. There's a Truman's public house to the right, it's The Star at the corner of Walworth Road and Deacon Street in SE5.

This was taken looking east from a 176 bus on Walworth Road. Deacon Street has been swallowed up. The Star would have been to the right. SJ

Sunday morning bells ring out. Looking towards the Tower of London from the vicinity of the warehouses on Cottons Wharf.

Very tricky to obtain the correct angle here as the gantry to HMS Belfast intrudes on the view. SJ

The Dunbar's crew begin their chores. A view of St. Paul's, beyond the warehouses of Queenhithe with Sunlight Wharf, Broken Wharf, Brooks Wharf and Abbey Wharf facing the Thames.

Phil Evans explains that St. Paul's and the tower of St. Mary Somerset remain, along with the renovated Brooks Wharf. "The spires of St. Nicholas Cole Abbey and St. Augustine Watling Street, both destroyed in the Blitz, were rebuilt in the 60s. The eaves of Sunlight Wharf seem to be remembered in the penthouse windows of Richard Seifert's Norfolk House."

Suffering from a whole day of drinking whisky, Chief Engineer Trotter (James Robertson Justice) appears on deck. Tower Bridge stands to the right.

Now.

A Salvation Army Band plays at a street corner. The corner of Battle Bridge Lane and Tooley Street in SE1 identified by RL and confirmed by Douglas Sharples who adds that The Duke of Clarence public house stood at 69 Tooley Street until closing in the 1970s and the interior also appears in the production.

A Policeman pounds his beat in the deserted ruins of the City while church bells continue to sound in the background. The street sign reads Wood Street and this is looking north from the corner of Gresham Street with the tower of the bomb damaged St. Alban church on the right. Also seen from the reverse point of view in 'Das Verrätertor'.

Considerable changes at Wood Street with a changed road design but the church tower remains. SJ

On another street, a Milkman continues his round. 41 Lothbury EC2, which can be seen in 'Stranger from Venus' and 'Hidden City' while other sections of the street appear in 'Flawless' and 'Inadmissible Evidence'.

As the acrobat uses his skills to gain entry to premises of W. Miller before letting Mike and Alf inside, a Constable notices the milk standing outside. Gresham Street at the corner of Wood Street with St. Lawrence Jewry to the centre. Richard Lovejoy explains that the area was heavily damaged during the Second World War and was restored in 1957.

This is a case of nearly third time lucky, though I'm leaning a little. The scaffolding was not helpful in my Jan '23 shot and a Dec '23 replacement was scarcely an improvement. SJ

While patrolling the area, a Detective spots the thieves ahead. Ray Glenister, along with ourselves, finds us in King William Street, EC4. The premises with the clock to the left being No 5 (currently Daiwa) and the premises to the right No 81 (currently ICBC). (RL)

The Standard is driven out of the City. This is Silvertown Way in E16 Way located by Christopher Matheson.

Taking this view, Phil Evans tells us that the roads and railways around Silvertown have been substantially redeveloped since the 1950s but the railway still runs south of North Woolwich Road, albeit now elevated.

Across a junction, the camera follows the car. Silvertown By-Pass seen from the junction with North Woolwich Road in E16 located by Christopher Matheson.

Phil Evans advises that the Silvertown By-pass was demolished by the LDDC in 1995. The extension of the Docklands Light Railway along the southern side of the Royal Docks, first opened in 2005, now runs along the route of the road.

On the elevated section of the Woolwich branch of the DLR, between Pontoon Dock and London City Airport, facing west towards the O2 and the Isle of Dogs, captured by Phil Evans.

The black Humber follows the gang's getaway over a bridge. Found by Christopher Matheson, this is the Silvertown By-Pass as it crosses Connaught Road by bowstring arch bridge. The bowstring arch bridge was also seen in 'The Cement Garden'.

Phil Evans explains that this is facing east on the same section of the DLR. The bowstring arch bridge seen in Pool of London and now the DLR viaduct pass over the southern entrance of the Connaught railway tunnel, built in 1878 beneath the Royal Docks. The tunnel was disused from 2006 after the closure of Silvertown and North Woolwich stations but was subsequently renovated and now forms part of the Elizabeth Line branch to Abbey Wood.

Another corner is taken at speed. Albert Road in E16 with the corner of Barge House Road to the left, the California public house at the corner of Milk Street in the left background and the Roundhouse public house at the corner of Woodman Street on the extreme right. The California closed in 2007 and was demolished within three years while the Roundhouse closed in 2003 to become flats called the Manor House.

The screech of tyres is heard as the Standard brakes to a halt. The causeway at the southern end of Barge House Road.

Phil Evans faced north from the slipway and adds that this area is part of section 15 of the Capital Ring walking route.

Pushing the car towards the river, the three crooks watch as it sinks into the water. Roy Barnacle tells us, with Les Stitson confirming, that this is definitely North Woolwich as the ferry can be seen in the background. The structure to the top of the capture is North Woolwich Pier, the former Great Eastern Railway Ferry Pier, disused for many years.

Phil Evans found the shelter on the North Woolwich Pier. The steps down to the beach have been added but it otherwise looks largely unchanged in 73 years.

Back at the river, the Thames Police Sergeant oversees operations as the Standard is dragged from the water. Richard Lovejoy identifies this as Barge House Road in E16 which also features in 'The Sandwich Man'.

Still very much the same as in the film except that the slipway and surrounding land has been raised as part of the Thames flood defences. (RL)

Chief Inspector Williamson arrives on the scene as another Officer signals the Driver of a tow truck pulling the getaway car out of the river. Looking north along Barge House Road with the ruins of the Old barge House to the left.

Continuing their Sunday together, Johnny and Pat run to catch a river bus towards Greenwich. Ray Glenister gave further thought to Richard's suggestion that this could have been Blackfriars Pier and, with further thought and evidence shows it to be Tower Bridge Pier looking west. (RL)

After a visit to the National Maritime Museum, the pair head for the Observatory. Looking from The Queen's House towards the Royal Naval College at Greenwich in SE10.

The colonnade of the former Royal residence in Greenwich, now forming part of the National Maritime Museum. The location can be seen in 'Sense and Sensibility', 'No Love for Johnnie', 'Four in the Morning', 'The Music Lovers' and, from a distance in 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' and 'The Lost Language of Cranes'.

To the right of the statue is Flamsteed House which opened as a museum in 1960. The chimneys were removed in 1958. (SD)

Longitude and latitude remain a mystery. The Royal Observatory at Greenwich which can also be seen in 'Sunday Bloody Sunday'. The covering of the 28 inch telescope dome had been stripped off by a V1 flying bomb in 1944.

Johnny tells Pat that when you're at the wheel of a ship at night, far at sea and nothing else to do, you think about a lot of things you don't understand. Seen from Greenwich Park SE10, in the background stand the smoke stacks of London Underground's Greenwich Power Station.

As Maisie becomes suspicious when Dan opens the package to find that it contains diamonds, Pat tells Johnny that she has tickets to the Camberwell Palace that night. Ray Glenister finds this to be Tower Bridge Road looking south towards the bridge at Druid Street, SE1

At Battle Bridge Lane, a downhearted Johnny gets off the tram leaving Pat to continue her journey to Camberwell. Once again, we're on Tooley Street in SE1 with the corner of Duke Street Hill in the left distance.

Now. The building in the centre is still intact. SJ.

Sailing on the evening tide, Johnny turns to walk back to the Dunbar. Looking in the other direction, towards Dockhead and Jamaica Road SE1.

During a fight after she overhears talk about diamonds, Pamela (Joan Dowling) storms from the house followed by her sister Maisie (Moira Lister).

As Chief Inspector Williamson stops the Dunbar from sailing when Pamela reports her sister, Johnny walks back to Battle Bridge Wharf after agreeing to take a second package aboard the ship for Dan. Following years of intermittent, but detailed debate, between the Glenister's and myself, Ron and I have finally settled on Potters Fields, SE1, looking south with 'Mark Browns Wharf' out of sight to the right and Johnny soon to arrive at the junction with Pickle Herring Street. (RL)

Johnny spots the Dunbar's Crew coming ashore and they tell him that they're not sailing until morning. With the Tower of London visible through the entry, this is the warehouse at the junction of Pickle Herring Street and Potters' Fields. A similar view appears in 'Dusty Bates'.

Richard Lovejoy remarks that the wharf buildings have gone, the dockers have gone and the Dunbar has set sail but the Tower of London remains.

With time to meet Pat, Johnny asks Harry how to get to Camberwell Palace. Pickle Herring Street in SE1.

Dan nervously approaches a Constable waiting at the top of the Dunbar's gangway.

Jumping from the ship when he learns that everyone is being searched, Dan scrambles across barges before going to look for Johnny. The Thames below Tower Bridge.

A nice view point with disguise of evidence of the tourist hordes. SJ

Pat waits outside the Camberwell Palace. Camberwell Green SE5, facing north on Denmark Hill with the Camberwell Palace Theatre at the corner of Orpheus Street. The theatre opened in 1899 and operated as a cinema between 1932 and 1942 before becoming the Camberwell Palace Theatre which was closed and demolished in 1956. JT was told that the cinema had Egyptian statues in the foyer at the bottom of the stairs.

Now, and only the continuity of the film helps here, as well as the parade of shops on the left. Cultural vandalism in all its glory. There is a rumour that the cinema in 'The Smallest Show on Earth' (qv) was inspired by the Camberwell Palace. SJ.

The corner with Orpheus Street looks slightly more welcoming on this sunnier day. SJ

Johnny approaches the theatre but his joy turns to sadness when he sees a group of Pat's Friends gather around her. The corner of Orpheus Street and Denmark Hill with Coldharbour Lane in the background confirmed by Simon James who adds that the tower in the background is the Odeon which replaced the Metropole in 1939 and was itself demolished in 1993.

Dan makes his way to Sally's flat after he discovers that he's wanted for murder since the Watchman had died from his injuries. Tanner Street SE1 with Dockhead in the distance.

As mentioned in captures 40 & 41, the road has been widened, with the houses on the right replaced by a set-back block. Devon Mansions is still there at the top left, on the corner of Tooley Street. The southernmost point of Shad Thames is top centre. SJ

Kicking a matchbox, Johnny walks away from the theatre before deciding to go into a bar for a drink. Found by Phil Evans this is outside the White Hart public house at the corner of Robin Hood Lane and Poplar High Street E14. The pub can also be seen in 'Saturday Night Out' and 'The Bells Go Down'.

Phil Evans looked north along Robin Hood Lane from the junction with Poplar High Street. Through the foliage you can just about see the eastern block of Robin Hood Gardens, currently being demolished, as well as the renovated Balfron Tower in the distance. Very different fates for these brutalist buildings.

As he walks through the riverside warehouses, Dan sees movement in the shadows. Shad Thames behind Tooley Street in Bermondsey SE1.

That is where the getaway car comes from in a few moments, but only cycles for now. (RL)

Vernon and Mike walk up to Dan demanding to know why the ship hasn't left and wanting to know where the diamonds are. Facing what is now St. Andrew's Wharf on Shad Thames.

When Dan is recognised by the two Constables, a radio message is sent out to all cars. In the background stand the businesses, seen in previous frames, of Brahams at number 89 and Fay Jay at 91 Walworth Road SE17 identified by Richard Lovejoy.

The current builkdings are set back Nos 89 and 91 would have been on the far left where there are now trees. SJ

While Johnny is taken on to an all night drinking den by Sam after the pub closes. Dan is driven away at gunpoint. Ray with the help of George found this to be 193, 195 and 197 Jamaica Road, London SE16. (RL)

Bells begin to ring as the Humber picks up speed. Richard Lovejoy found Fred Terry at 107 and C. Stanley at 109 Walworth Road here seen from the corner of Hampton Street in SE17.

A repeat of my shot comparing capture 42 in which the Star (101 Walworth Road) on the corner of Deacon Street is seen. So nos 107 and 109 would be to the right behind the back of the bus. SJ

Looking back, Alf sees that they are being followed. Richard Lovejoy identifies the Midland Bank, Rotherhithe Tunnel branch, at 345 Jamaica Road SE16 where Jamaica Road once met Lower Road. All was demolished as part of the disputed Southwark Park extension and is now part King's Stairs Gardens. The footage was reused for 'Terror Street' made two years later.

At a junction, a lorry pulls out in front of the police car. Walworth Road in SE17 with properties between Elephant Road and Deacon Street in the background including the King's Arms public house at number 87 to the left of centre.

As the Maudslay forces the police Humber to a stand, Mike tells Alf to head for Jock's place. Richard Lovejoy explains that H. Davis, dyers and cleaners traded at 99 Walworth Road, which at that time was on the corner of Deacon Street in an area now heavily redeveloped.

The Jaguar reaches the Rotherhithe Tunnel's approach road. Rotherhithe Tunnel approach road at the junction of Jamaica Road, Brunel Road and Lower Road in SE16.

On the move again, the police car enters the tunnel. The southern entrance of Rotherhithe Tunnel with the steps in the centre ascending to Brunel Road.

Dan overpowers his captors and escapes up the ventilation shaft stairs after Alf crashes the car. The bottom of the stairs leading up from Rotherhithe Tunnel to the surface.

Victor and Mike get out of the Jaguar and set off after Dan. The interior of Rotherhithe Tunnel also features in 'Everything', 'Party Party' and 'Last Christmas'.

Shots are fired as Dan races to the surface ahead of his two pursuers. The stairs in Ventilation Shaft Number 2.

The Police arrive at the crashed Jaguar as Dan leaves the ventilation shaft's exit. Known by various names, this is the entrance to Air Shaft number 2 off Rotherhithe Street SE16.

Now. Up for repair . . . or destruction?

Climbing a fence, Dan runs through a coal yard. Looking westward from the passage leading from Air Shaft number 2 to Rotherhithe Street.

After far too many rums, Johnny is thrown out of the drinking den after being robbed of his money. With so much 'action' taking place in the area Ray Glenister established that this action was, not surprisingly, taking place in Potters Fields, facing north. (RL)

In the early light of Monday morning, Dan drags himself from the river after swimming ashore from a sailing barge. The jetty at Rainham Wharf to the east of Coldharbour Point in Essex with Crayford Ness and Erith visible across the Thames. (PW)

Holding his injured arm, Dan walks along a rickety railway line, past a simmering locomotive attached to its train of dilapidated wagons. Rainham Rubbish Shoot in the Essex marshes alongside the Thames at Great Coldharbour. The loco belonging to W.R. Cunis (Waste Disposal) Ltd. appears to be an Andrew Barclay 0-4-0 saddle tank. (PW)

Reaching a busy road, Dan begins to thumb a lift back to London. The junction is that of the A13 New Road, the A125 Rainham Road and the B1335 Bridge Road in Rainham, Essex. The A13 was diverted along a new alignment and the old A13 route became the A1306.

Back in London, Johnny wakes with a hangover.

A truck brings Dan into the Capital. Looking east along Winchester Walk SE1 with Cathedral Street and Southwark Cathedral in the right distance.

Dan climbs from the truck and heads for the Dunbar. Southwark Cathedral looms over the railway arch and Ian Hadley confirms that the public house is the Globe Tavern at 8 Bedale Street in SE1. The area appears in 'Bridget Jones Diary', 'Lassiter', 'The Boy and the Bridge', 'The French Lieutenant's Woman', 'What a Girl Wants' and 'Blue Ice' among other productions.

Johnny hurries towards the wharf. As seen earlier, the quay that used to run along the Thames to the south and west of Tower Bridge. Les Stitson observes that this is on Bankside between Southwark Bridge, which is in the background, and Cannon Street railway bridge which is behind the camera.

As his ship is departing, Dan hands himself over to Mr. Andrews and Detective Inspector Williams on Battle Bridge Wharf. The area retains the name of Potters' Fields and is where Queen's Walk now runs near to City Hall.
