Question of Suspense, A

On a Friday morning, Jim Tellman Drew (Peter Reynolds) leaves home and gets into his car. Barely 'was the ink dry' when Geoff Dodd and Steve Randall both came up with the answer to this location. It was the Glencormac Hotel, formerly Glencormac House, in Kilmacanogue, County Wicklow, which was unfortunately destroyed by fire in 1967. (RL)

Closing the door of his terraced house, Frank Brigstock (Norman Rodwell) walks to the bus stop. Facing 128 Donnybrook Road, Dublin 4.

Jim arrives at the offices of the firm that share his name.

Frank stands on the platform of the bus as it nears his stop. Donnybrook Road with Mulberry Lane to the extreme left.

Jumping from the bus, the accountant makes his way towards a small café. The corner of Donnybrook Road and Belmont Avenue in Dublin 4, just across the road from the house where he started.

A local at the bar told Paschal Newell that the pub has changed hands a couple of times since filming,

In his office Jim asks for Frank, while his old school-friend and employee buys coffee. Donnybrook Road, Dublin 4.

After Frank confronts the crooked businessman about his involvement in a recent bond robbery, Jim drives the two of them to his beach house along the coast at the story's Stainham. Pat Cleary identifies this as above Kilmacanogue, County Wicklow with the Wicklow Mountain peaks of Djouce and Maulin standing in the right distance

As the road is narrow, this is Pat's dash-cam view from the junction of the R755 and R760 which is now partly obscured by high bushes. "As teenagers, we used to cycle up this mile and a half hill to reach the Calary approach to Great Sugar Loaf Mountain followed by a reckless but exciting downhill run later in the day."

Jim's blue Jaguar cruises along the coastal road. Victoria Road in Greystones, Country Wicklow with Beach Road heading off to the right.

Alan Bourke explains that to the left in the screen capture stands an early incarnation of Sweeney's ice cream shop which became a renowned fish and chip shop frequented by walkers who had trekked from Bray via Bray Head. Standing to the left is W H Dann & Son's pub and the attached Beach House pub.

Fishermen fold their nets as the car passes. The harbour breakwater at Greystones stands in the background, an area that is now occupied by Greystones Marina.

The pair approach the dilapidated beach house where Tellman has buried the bonds. Alan Bourke identifies the house as close to the railway line inland from Greystones north beach in County Wicklow, near where Rathdown Castle once stood.

Over the years, ongoing major coastal erosion has obliterated swathes of this coastline and Pat Cleary stood as close to the crumbling 30ft clifftops as he dared.

A police car approaches the home of Frank and his partner Rose Marples. Facing north on Morehampton Road in Dublin 4.

Inspector Hunter (James Neylin) and Detective Sergeant White (Peter Dix) get out of the car to ask Frank about forged bonds. Looking into Victoria Avenue from Morehampton Road in Donnybrook.

The Detectives call at the house and discover that Frank hasn't been seen since Saturday morning. Facing numbers 128 and 130 on Morehampton Road, Dublin 4.

With Frank implicated in the theft and forgery of bonds, radio messages are broadcast asking for his present whereabouts.

Calling on Rose one evening, Jim takes her to dinner. Looking towards Donnybrook Road from outside 128 Morehampton Road.

As Jim continues to court Rose, he arranges for her to move into a flat near his house. Facing north on Sussex Terrace, Dublin 4 identified by Pat Cleary who adds that the Grand Canal flows just behind the white van in the left distance. A scene for 'Rooney' was shot around the corner to the right.

Pat found that the landscape here has changed considerably over the years.

The car carrying Rose draws up outside an apartment block in a nice, quiet neighbourhood. Pat Cleary found Cherry House on Sussex Terrace.

Pat advises that, after 62 years, this is no longer such a quiet neighbourhood.

A Concierge crosses to a car that has pulled up outside a luxury clothes shop. Duke Street, Dublin 2, looking towards the junction with Dawson Street identified by Pat Cleary.

Pat explains that the luxury clothes shop is currently a large M&S store and a 40ft refrigerated HGV was parked on double yellow lines right in front of it stopping him from getting the shot from the original position. It was still there an hour later!!!

Once the door is opened, Rose gets out of the car and enters the store. Found by Pat Cleary, here's Duke Street, Dublin looking towards the junction with Grafton Street.

The next building along is the well-known Bailey Bar and eatery and an HGV causing Pat so much grief is immediately to the left, just out of shot.

Rose pays a visit to her hair stylist. Located by Pat Cleary, this is Merrion Row, Dublin 2, looking towards St. Stephen's Green in the left distance.

Pat tells us that this short, narrow road now has outdoor eateries on both sides of the street with a single lane of traffic squeezed into the middle.

In Pat's modern view, the Hair salon is now a Spar food store.

In the car that Jim has provided for her, Rose heads towards the beach house at Stainham. Discovered by Pat Cleary, this is facing south on Sussex Terrace in Dublin 4.

Pad had no chance of getting a car-free shot in this area.

Rose continues the drive southward. This is the junction of the R760 and R755 at Rocky Valley near Kilmacanogue, County Wicklow identified by Alan Bourke who adds that the high crags to the right are where shots for 'The Gentle Gunman' were filmed from.

Alan took this view slightly to the to the right as there are now bushes covering the original angle.

Searching the grounds of the beach house, Rose makes a horrific discovery. Alan Bourke locates the house close to the site of Rathdown Castle, just inland from Greystones north beach with Bray Head in the distance. which was seen in 'Another Shore' and 'Yesterday's Children'.
