Quiet Man, The

According to Tony Reeves, that mine of location information, the station is Balyglunin, between Sligo and Limerick.

This shot was taken in 2001 and the station is virtually unchanged. The footbride used in the revese ange from this shot in the film has been moved to another station. From Chris.

Cong village, (and no - the big round thing at the start of the Rank films is a gong), Ireland, between Lough Mask and Lough Corrib, Connemara. Thanks to Tony Reeves' book on World Wide locations.

Cohan's Bar, Cong, Co. Mayo. This building was never an actual pub but was a store. The owner at the time of my photo, 2001, was Jack Murphy who actually had a crowd scene part in the film in the fight near the Cong river. Chris.

This shows the corner of Cohan's Bar, having ridden down the hill past the Cong cross. In the background on the left can be seen the remains of Cong Abbey. If you went around to the back of the abbey alongside the Cong River you will see the place where John Wayne knocked Victor McLaglan into the river. (The stunt was actually performed by Pat Ford, John Ford's son). Chris

Widow Tillane’s house, which was across the Cong River from Ashford Castle, has sadly been demolished to make room for a car park. It's in an area called Strandhill, the hill over the river shore (strand), just south of Cong. Information from Mike and image copyright Google Earth.

Yes, it was real but as already witnessed it has been neglected. There have, according to Bill Ayers, been attempts to contact the owners but without success. The ruins of 'White O' Mourn' cottage in Maam Cross, Connemara. This shot is very close to the film's angle. The hills can just be made out beyond the now overgrown trees. Sad to see this once fine building in ruins. Chris.

This shot, taken in 2001, shows the river and dirt track that leads up to the cottage, sadly vastly overgrown now. Some of the boulders can still be seen in the river. Hard to believe this was the scene for one of the most iconic end sequences in film. Chris.

This scene was shot in the grounds of Ashford Castle, Cong. The house in the background with the white paint around the windows was used as Dannaher's farm. The courting scene was partly shot here, where Duke and Maureen first board the horse and carriage. Interestingly the wall on which all the people are sitting was also used in the scene where Maureen O'Hara watches John Wayne carry the bed into the White O'Mourn cottage. Even though the cottage is several miles away in Maam Cross. Clever editing!! Chris

Niamh Morris says that this is Thoor Ballylee in Ballylee, Gort, Co. Galway. The tower is also known as Yeats' Tower as the poet WB Yeats lived there in the early 20th Century.

John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara look over the other side of the street towards Victor McLaglen who is standing outside P. Curran. P. Curran was in fact located on the same side of main street as the Emily O'Connor building (grabbed elsewhere) albeit about 40 - 50 yards further up Main Street. Sean walking home from Clifden Market about a 30 minute drive away, and a 5 minute drive from Lettergesh beach where the Horse race took place. The cottage has since been upgraded. More fine work from Paschal Newell (SJ).

Another house.... This is where the fight started (actually at the top of this slope) and shows the opposite angle of the house shown in the photo of the iron gate, qtm023 with Ward Bond and James Lilburn. This house is in the grounds of Ashford Castle, just a short distance from Ashford Farm. Chris

This street is Radharc Na Habhann (Riverview) in Cong, County Mayo. Information from Mike.

The vicar?... The vicar in this shot with Ward Bond is James Lilburn, brother of Maureen O'Hara. This scene was shot in the grounds of Ashford Castle. I recently read on the internet that this gate was, sadly, stolen in recent years. The house in the background featured prominently at the beginning of the fight scene. The fight started in the field which is to the right of the house (out of shot) as we look from here. The gable end is clearly visible in the film.

Yet another street.

This shot is taken in Cong and is the road where the final shots of the film were done in which the people all stand along the wall and cheer the vicar along. The woman on the bicycle would have just passed, on the lower right hand corner and out of shot, the place where the Quiet Man tourist cottage now stands on the corner. The second up of the two small houses seen in the background next to the Large House with three windows was used as the home of Old Dan Tobin, the dying man. Chris
