Rififi in Amsterdam

The opening scene of the movie has been taken from Het Havengebouw, De Ruijterkade 7, Amsterdam and we are looking at the river Ij. Same location has been used in 'Puppet on a Chain' and 'Modesty Blaise'.

We see the ferry on the Ij that connects the North and the South of Amsterdam. A small boat picks up a mysterious and well protected package, loaded with diamonds from the shore and moves on.

As can be seen, the ferry that goes from Central Station to Amsterdam North has been modernised.

The boats moves on in the Kloveniersburgwal. The shot has been taken from the Oost-Indische Huisbridge that connects Rusland with Raamgracht. The boat is watched by some obscure people who want to make a heist. The man who is painting throws some kind of gas grenade in the boat. Everybody falls asleep.

The only thing that has changed, is that the painter is not there anymore.

Rex Monroe (Roger Brown) and Oriana (Aida Power) jump on the boat to take over the steering wheel. Location unknown.

Some obscure looking gangsters are standing on the bridge at the intersection of Raamgracht and Groenburgwal. The same bridge can also be seen in the movie 'Operation Amsterdam'.

Although the house in the background looks old, it is not. As can be seen from the screen capture, the original house has been demolished and replaced by a new one.

The lads run quickly and jump on the boat on the Raamgracht.

As usual there are boats in the canals of Amsterdam. They seem to be bigger these days.

The boat sails on the Oudeschans at the intersection with Rapenburgwal.

Almost the same angle as the capture but Frank wanted to keep his feet dry.

The police have spotted them and the chase is on. We look at the Nicolaaskerk on the Prins Hendrikkade. The exact name of the location is: Open Havenfront. The same location can also be seen in 'Amsterdamned' and 'Moord in Extase'.

Water has been replaced by a bridge nowadays and Frank thinks this a really ugly.

The police contact headquarters to find out the exact details of the boat. This shot was taken from Prins Hendrikkade toward the Oude Schans. On the right can be seen the Montelbaantoren.

The best possible shot, without taking a boat or swimming in the canal, is from a bridge.

The Montelbaantoren at the Oude Schans and the chase is on. This tower can also be seen in the movie 'Amsterdamned'.

Besides the Montebaantoren on the left, in the background right can be seen the science museum NEMO .

The thieves go ashore and let the boat go on it’s own without any passengers on board. Location Keizersgracht, The shot is taken from Keizersgracht 407 and we are looking at the opposite side.

It seems that in the year 2020 there are many more boats and cars in Frank’s beloved city.

The police are chasing an empty boat now but they don’t know that yet. Location Keizersgracht, The shot is taken from Keizersgracht 407 and we are looking at the intersection with Leidsegracht.

Here, can clearly be seen that the bridges has been rebuild over the years to make it possible for bigger boats to float through the canals. Frank thinks that the round bridges look much better than the square ones. Indeed, especially in a perfect reflection. (RL)

Here is the Volkswagen T1 and the thieves jump in the car and try to get away from the crime scene as soon as possible. Location: Intersection of Leidsegracht and Prinsengracht.

When you think the street lantern is the same, you are wrong. They all have been replaced years ago by LED lamps. The modern times. And why are people on bikes not allowed to go to the left and is there anybody on a bike who will avoid going to the left??

The police boat has lost the suspects and the thieves are gone. The same location can be seen in the movie 'Amsterdamned' but from a different angle. This is the place where the speedboat flies over the bridge. Also in 'Puppet on a Chain' Capture 50. Location: Intersection of Leidsegracht and Keizersgracht.

Frank did read somewhere on 'ReelStreets' that they made the bridges higher so bigger boats can go through the canals. That is indeed true. In the 80’s and 90’s they adapted or changed quit a few bridges in the center of the city.

When the thieves want to transfer the loot in Holland and get paid for their theft everything goes wrong and only Rex and Oriana can escape but the loot is gone and the crew except for Rex and Oriana are dead. Rex finds out that there is a link to Rotterdam and he jumps in a car and drives to Rotterdam. Meanwhile in Paris some hotshots send an assassin to Rotterdam to kill Rex. Location: rooftop 22 Av. des Champs-Élysées, Paris in the direction of Arc de Triomphe.

Left we see the assassin who gets his order to kill Rex and in the background some tower that seems to remind me of something. During the conversation the viewer finds out that the loot were some diamonds.

The assassin waits in front of the Rijn Hotel in Rotterdam for Rex Monroe. Rex already booked in with Oriana. Location: Mauritsweg shot is taken from Kruisplein, Rotterdam

The only building that stayed the same and is De Doelen on the left. The rest is all gone and….. Who’s idea was it to put that huge grey metal box called Imax here. Back to the drawing board you architects!

That mysterious Oriana signals the assassin that Rex will leave the hotel. She seems to play a double role. Location: Mauritsweg. Entrance of Rijn Hotel, demolished in 2008 and replaced by 'Calypso', designed by William Allsop.

Here everything has changed.

The assassin follows Rex through Rotterdam and waits for that moment to strike and kill Rex. Location: Parkhaven, Rotterdam

Back then there were pedestrians and now the cars are allowed. In the background, the brown building on the left is the old tax building on the Puntegaalstraat.

On top of the Euromast Rex meets another strange but beautiful young woman who cuts portraits out of black paper. There are also two other beautiful young woman. Who are they and what role do they play in this scenario? Strangely enough these two girls kill the assassin on top of the Euromast. Rex sees that the girl who cuts portraits out of paper runs away and Rex decides to follow her. Location: Euromast, Rotterdam.

He follows her over this beautiful 1870 monumental bridge. Location: Koninginnebrug on the side of the Prins Hendrikkade, Rotterdam.

It is obvious that in Rotterdam not many people take a bike for transportation these days.

Thanks to Franks good old pal Anton, who lived his entire live in Rotterdam, Anton found out where this location was. Thanks Anton!! The girl starts to notice that she has been followed and starts to run. When she runs into a building there is a fight between Rex and the girl’s back up. Of course Rex wins. Location: 2de Katendrechtsehaven, Rotterdam.

Here we see from the 2de Katendrechtsehaven the Walhallalaan and there is absolute nothing to recognise anymore. If Frank hadn't had the help of Anton he would have never found this location. We at 'ReelStreets' say: “Dank je Anton”.

The big boss arrives in an American car. Strangely enough the loot is in the back of this car. The big boss comes with a proposal so Rex can make even more money. He has to fly to a boat named 'Corbina', when he arrives there he has to follow further instructions. He will go to Torremolinos, Hotel Riviera. There Rex has to hand over the loot and he will get paid. On board Rex finds out that the loot, diamonds, will be used for some special type of secret laser weapon. Location: 2e Katendrechtsehaven, Rotterdam.

In the 80’s and 90’s these location had a total transformation and here you see the result. Frank says: “Nogmaals bedankt Anton”.

Just before Rex arrives in Torremolinos he was knocked out and a sailor steals the loot and goes ashore. On board Rex had seduced a beautiful young woman and she tells Rex where the thief went. Rex takes off with the speed of light. Rex finds the thief and gets into a fight and gets the diamonds back in his hands. Location: Torremolinos, Spain.

Rex finally arrives at Hotel Riviera and it turns out that Oriana, who he stayed with in the Rijn Hotel in Rotterdam is also staying at the hotel. Such a coincidence……. and in the room next to him! While he is in his bathroom Rex gets a message that tomorrow he has to go to Granada to make the transfer of the loot. Location: Avda. Antonio Machado 49 29630 Benalmadena Costa (Málaga).

Rex moved to Granada to make the transfer and he receives his payment. At his hotel Rex was visited by the FBI and he escapes in a spectacular way but was then caught by the gangster together with Oriana. Here we see the Alhambra. The Alhambra "The Red One"' is a palace and fortress complex located in Granada, Andalusia, Spain. It was originally constructed as a small fortress in AD 889 on the remains of Roman fortifications, and then largely ignored until its ruins were renovated and rebuilt in the mid-13th century by the Nasrid emir Mohammed ben Al-Ahmar of the Emirate of Granada, who built its current palace and walls with many beautiful, intricate details.

For some reason there will be a final meeting between the big boss and the widow of a WOII scientist to hand over the diamonds to make the secret laser weapon. Location: Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain.

Oriana and Rex are chained in a cave by the big boss and the widow. It turns out that the original scientist, Mister Fisher, is still alive and he will target the laser at a French H-bomb in the Sahara. Luckily, the beautiful woman who Rex seduced on the boat shows up and frees him and Oriana. Rex shoots the mad scientist and there is no laser fired at the H-bomb. The critical situation is over. Location: Hotel Tenerife Playa, Tenerife, Spain.

In the epilogue of the movie Rex and Oriana do visit the US embassy in the city of love, Paris. They are giving a rightful pardon and are free to go. This building is still the US Embassy. Location: 2 Avenue Gabriel, Paris, France, the US Embassy in Paris.

The end and we do see the top of some tower in the city of Paris. Frank doesn’t seem to remember the name of that tower.
