Jo le Suedois (Carl Möhner) arrives at the bar where Tony le Stéphanois has been gambling all night. The building still stands at the corner of Rue Pascal and Rue de Valence in Paris 75005, France.

Jo remarks that playing cards all night in a smoke filled room is just what ex con Tony le Stéphanois (Jean Servais) needs! Rue Pascal near Port-Royal which is seen later in the film. The bridge in the background has been reconstructed.

Well known criminal Tony isn't interested in the job and, after dinner with Jo and his family, goes to L'Age d'Or nightclub. Rue Pigalle (since renamed Rue Jean-Baptiste Pigalle) at the junction with Rue de Douai and Rue Victor Massé, Paris 75009.

Tony enters the club where he finds his former girlfriend, Mado. Rue Pigalle in the 9th arrondissement.

After changes are made to the robbery plans, Tony is in and the gang start to case the jewellery shop. Rue de la Paix in Paris.

Later in the morning, when the shop opens, César arrives to view the merchandise and to find what alarms there are. On Rue de la Paix with Rue des Capucines to the right and Place Vendôme ahead.

After meticulous preparation, the night of the robbery arrives and Tony steals a getaway car before picking up the other gang members. Place de l'Opéra, Paris 75009 with Le Grand Hotel in the right background.

The gang drive to an alley close to Mappin & Webb. Christian Gehret explains that this is facing Rue Boissy d'Anglas from Cité du Retiro with the still extant number 30 Rue Boissy d'Anglas in the background. Christian adds that Cité du Retiro has since been completely demolished and replaced.

During the robbery, the street is checked and a Policeman is seen on his beat. Looking onto Rue de la Paix from above Mappin & Webb.

Bicycles would hamper a getaway today. HB

In the early hours, two Policemen find the getaway car and become suspicious. Christian Gehret spotted that this is a location seen earlier, looking into Cité du Retiro from Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré.

When the robbery is completed, Tony leaves to collect the car. Place Vendôme with the Vendôme Column, a monument surmounted by a statue of Napoléon, to the left.

Tony arrives with the getaway car after knocking the Policemen out and picks up Jo, Mario and César le Milanais (Jules Dassin). Rue de la Paix, Paris.

Tony disposes of the suitcases containing equipment used in the heist. On Pont de Bir-Hakeim with the camera facing buildings on Avenue du Président Kennedy. Paris 16.

When Mario and his wife Ida are killed by L'Age d'Or owner Pierre Grutter, Tony kills César who had informed on the gang. Rue Pigalle, Paris.

The Inspector tells a journalist that he is attending the funeral as a matter of form, not expecting any known criminals to turn up. Unconfirmed location.

Rémi Grutter (Robert Hossein) follows Louise and Tonio as they go to catch a bus. Likely to be Place Valhubert, Paris.

The Grutter brothers let Louise go but kidnap Tonio, telling her that they want the gems in exchange for her Son. Pont d'Auteuil, Paris 16. The bridge was demolished in 1959 and replaced by Pont du Garigliano.

Louise runs through the arches of Pont d'Auteuil after the Grutter's car. The arches carried the Petite Ceinture railway over the Seine.

When Louise arrives home she tells Jo and Tony what has happened. Looking north west from the present southern end of Rue Villiers de l'Isle Adam with Rue de la Bidassoa to the left and Rue d'Annam to the right.

The search continues but no one can help. An unidentified location likely to be somewhere in Ménilmontant / Belleville. Much of the area was demolished in the 1960s as a slum clearance project. 'g.carre' points us to the Website www.L2tc.com that tells us that "The Cité Billon emerged on the long Passage Notre-Dame-de-la-Croix (also disappeared in the 1960s) and was part of the polygon defined by the streets of the Crowns, Henri Chevreau, de la Mare, Of Eupatoria and Julien Lacroix. Mado (Marie Sabouret) appears and tells Tony where he can find Grutter's hide out. Passerelle de la Mare that carries Rue de la Mare over the now disused Petite Ceinture railway line in Ménilmontant, Paris 75021. The church to the right is Notre Dame de la Croix and was seen in 'The Red Balloon' as was the other end of this short road.

As Mado is known to associate with Pierre Grutter, she goes into a dry cleaners shop to order drugs for Rémi Grutter whilst Tony calls Jo.

Charlie, the Grutter's drug dealer, is persuaded to make a delivery to Rémi and Mado leaves the shop. Avenue Georges Bernanos, Paris.

After Tony seriously injures Louis and kills Rémi he rescues Tonio and drives to phone Jo. Rue des Chantiers, Versailles, Île-de-France. Identified by thecinetourist.net

Tony finds a cafe to make the call from. Place Raymond Poincaré where Rue Benjamin Franklin and Rue des États Généraux meet in Versailles, Île-de-France.

When he phones, Louise tells Tony that Pierre Grutter has called and Jo has left for the villa in Saint-Rémy-lès-Chevreuse. Through the windows can be seen the junction of Rue des États Généraux and Rue Benjamin Franklin across Place Raymond Poincaré in Versailles.

Christian Gehret checked out the clues in the capture to find 2 Rue Dailly in St. Cloud in the western suburbs of Paris where a bistro called "Le Saint-Cloud" occupied the premises of Café Le Royal.

Tony fights his injuries to drive on. Christian Gehret recognised the skyline of St. Cloud seen from Quai du 4 Septembre in Boulogne-Billancourt, clearly recognisable by Église Saint-Clodoald, a closer view of which can be seen in 'Zéro de conduite'.

Boulevard de Belleville in Paris advises Christian Gehret who adds that the building in the left of centre background is 122 Boulevard de Belleville at the corner of Rue Lemon in Paris 75020.

Tonio enjoys the ride as Tony struggles to continue. Unknown location.
