Russia House, The

Katya Orlova (Michelle Pfeiffer), a Russian book editor, is walking in Moscow on her way to an audio cassette fair. She is first seen walking along Kremlevskiy Proyezd (Kremlin Drive). Behind her on the left side is the Nikolskaya Tower.

She then comes on to Manege Square (Manezhnaya Square). This is a large area that was closed to traffic and substantially renovated as a pedestrian open space in the 1990's.

She enters the Hotel National on Mokhovaya Street, Moscow.

Niki Landau (Nicholas Woodeson) has delivered the manuscript from Katya to the Foreign & Commonwealth Office government building in London. This shot was taken on the Clive Steps, right next to the Robert Clive Memorial statue at 69 Horse Guards Rd, Westminster, London SW1A 2AG.

Merrydew (Ian McNeice) walks along Rua Jardim do Tabaco (Tobacco Garden Street) in Lisbon, Portugal. He is here to speak to Barley (Sean Connery).

Ross Forbes visited this Lisbon location in nicer weather than the film!

As Merrydew stands in the cafe doorway, we can see across the street to the Russian Orthodox Church building that is located on Rua Jardim do Tabaco 1, 1100-081 Lisboa, Portugal.

Ross Forbes got a good comparison shot, clearly showing the front of the Russian Church across the road.

Merrydew and Barley take a car ride to the MI6 meeting in Lisbon. This is located on Largo da Academia Nacional de Belas Artes 10, 1249-061 Lisbon, Portugal (the street combines with Ivens Street (Rua Ivens).

Ross Forbes again managed to get a great shot of the same Lisbon location.

Intrigued by Katya's photo, Connery look out across the Lisbon skyline whilst being propositioned by the government agents. This is in the Alfama District. The 3 high buildings visible are, from the left, the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora (the burial place of the Braganza monarchs of Portugal), in the middle, Church of Santa Engrácia Church of Santa Engrácia (which was a church but in the 20th century it was converted into the National Pantheon) and on the right is Saint Stephen Church (Igreja de Santo Estêvão).

Getting up to the same vantage point, Ross Forbes managed to get a great shot of the same scene. This terrace is publicly accessible and is popular with tourists due to the impressive view.

Sean Connery walks back to his Lisbon apartment, located at Escolas Gerais 88, 1100-383 Lisbon, Portugal, to find it searched and turned over.

Continuing his sunny tour of Lisbon, Ross Forbes found Barley's apartment.

The publishing house where Katja works in Moscow. This is Zubovsky Boulevard, Garden Ring. The Garden Ring, also known as the "B" Ring, is a circular ring road avenue around central Moscow, its course corresponding to what used to be the city ramparts surrounding Zemlyanoy Gorod in the 17th century. The Ring consists of seventeen individually named streets and fifteen squares.

Katja and Barley finally get to meet in Russia at the Hotel Ukraine (as of 2019 it is the Radisson Collection Hotel).

They go for a walk in Red Square, Moscow.

Another shot in Red Square. This film was the first Western film production to get filming permission and full co-operation from the Russian government. Previous Western-made films such as the Arnold Schwarzenegger film 'Red Heat' were denied permission and had to grab their shots secretly.

They then shop for shoes in the GUM (Glavny Universalny Magazin (translates as Main Universal Store). The GUM is the main department store in many cities of the former Soviet Union. This store is the most famous and is right next to Red Square in Moscow. It is a 3-story shopping arcade with a semicircular glass roof & international brands.

Barley attempts to get to know Katya better whilst walking along Tverskaya Street in Moscow. Where they are walking is on a part of Tverskaya that is right next to Tverskaya Ploshchad (Tverskaya Square) which has a bronze statue of 12th century prince & city founder Yuri Dolgorukiy on horseback. The tower block right behind Michelle Pfeiffer's head seems to have been demolished since this film was made.

Katya gets out of a taxi. She is in front of the Bankomat Pao Sberbank, Leninskiy Prospekt, 8, Moscow, Russia 119049. This is on the the site of First City Hospital named after N.I. Pirogov (the official name as of 2009 is City Clinical Hospital No 1 of N.I.Pirogova). Nikolay Ivanovich Pirogov 1810 – 1881 was a prominent Russian scientist, medical doctor, pedagogue, public figure, and corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He is considered to be the founder of field surgery, and was one of the first surgeons in Europe to use ether as an anesthetic. He is one of the most widely recognized Russian physicians.

She walks to a side entrance, just to the left from where she got out of the taxi.

Connery and Michelle walk and talk in the grounds of The Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius. It is a walled Orthodox monastery, founded by a 14th-century saint. It's the most important Russian monastery and the spiritual centre of the Russian Orthodox Church. The monastery is situated in the town of Sergiyev Posad, about 70 km to the north-east from Moscow by the road leading to Yaroslavl, and currently is home to over 300 monks.

Connery arrives in Leningrad (St Petersburg). The hydrofoil is heading from the area near The Palace Bridge and in the background are the various buildings such as the Winter Palace of Peter I, Palace of the Grand Duke Vladimir Romanov, Novo-Mikhailovsky Palace and others.

We see a shot of the hotel where Barley is staying. As of 2019 it is the Park Inn by Radisson Pribaltiyskaya Hotel & Congress Center located at 14 Korablestoiteley Street, Saint Petersberg, Russia, 199226.

Connery walks across Big Stables Street, at roughly no. 7 (Bolshaya Konyushennaya Street, 7) in St Petersburg, Russia. Konyushenny Lane (Konyushennyy Pereulok) is behind the camera and at the end of the street ahead is Nevsky avenue.

With the first hope of meeting Dante, Connery proceeds to the first meeting place. He passes from an unidentified street...

...through into what seems to be a rear of a building, with a small green area in the background. This may be the courtyard area behind no. 29 along the Griboyedov channel embankment.

Then he moves into an unidentified parking area...

...and then emerges onto Griboyedov channel embankment (roughly no. 26). You can see the gold wings of the Griffins of Bank Bridge in the background.

But it seems the 3rd meeting place might have produced better results. He is walking in the Summer Garden, a waterside 18th-century garden with later modifications & filled with statuary & mature planting. Connery is pictured on the path between the Museum of the History of the Summer Garden (Muzey Istorii Letnego Sada) and Monument of Ivan Andreyevich Krylov (Pamyatnik I.a. Krylovu). Ivan is Russia's best-known fabulist and probably the most epigrammatic of all Russian authors.

Finally he meets Dante (Klaus Maria Brandauer). They are standing next to The Monument to the Fighters of the Revolution, a memorial on the Field of Mars in Saint Petersburg. It marks the burial places of some of those who died during the Revolutions in 1917, and casualties who died between 1917 and 1933 in the Russian Civil War or otherwise in the establishment of Soviet power. It contains the first eternal flame in Russia.

Barley and Dante walk along Bolshaya Morskaya Street (Bol'shaya Morskaya Ulitsa) in Saint Petersberg...

...and continue under the archway and into the stunning Palace Square, as Dante talks about the Russian revolution. The iconic monolith in the center is the Alexander Column (Aleksandrovskaya Kolonna) which commemorates Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s France. This square is also seen in the Bond film 'Goldeneye'.

Barley and Dante talk about the past and Dante pleads with Barley to publish his work as they walk along the south west bank of The Peter and Paul Fortress (the original citadel of St. Petersburg, Russia, founded by Peter the Great in 1703). In the background of this shot you can see the dome of St. Isaac's Cathedral, the 1818 Russian Orthodox cathedral & museum. Some of the background is also shown in the Bond movie 'Goldeneye'.

Barley introduces various contacts to each other in Moscow, Russia. They are at the Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy, a permanent general purpose trade show and amusement park in Moscow, Russia. Between 1991 and 2014 it was also called the All-Russia Exhibition Centre.

He then meets up with Katya, with the Yakovlev Yak-42 aircraft in the background. The Yak-42 was the first airliner produced in the Soviet Union to be powered by modern high-bypass turbofan engines. Behind the plane you can see part of the Vostok Rocket. This family of rockets launched the first artificial satellite (Sputnik 1) and the first crewed spacecraft (Vostok) in human history.

They go for a drive with one of Katya's children. Kudrinskaya Square Building is in the background (it is part of a group of seven skyscrapers called The Seven Sisters designed in the Stalinist style and built between 1947 to 1953). This shot may have been photographed from Bolshaya Gruzinskaya Street in Moscow.

They go for walk in Kolomenskoye, an open-air museum on former royal estate, with tours, events and architecture from different eras. Visible through the trees is the 'Our Lady of Kazan church' in Kolomenskoe park.

They walk through the archway in Kolomenskoe park and down onto the viewpoint where she translates a letter from Yakov. Kolomenskoye estate is situated several kilometers to the southeast of the city center of Moscow.

Barley visits Katya in her home located behind building 21 on Verkhnyaya Maslovka Street (Ulitsa Verkhnyaya Maslovka), Moscow, Russia, 127083.

Next day Katya picks up Barley in a car at Ploshchad' Krasnopresnenskaya Zastava (Krasnopresnenskaya Zastava Square). The square is also the location of Moscow Metro station which is named after the square. Just to the left of this shot is a Monument to the heroes of the Revolution of 1905.

They drive the hospital. She is on the site of the Russian State Medical University (search 'Leninsky Prospekt., 8 Building 80, Moskva, Moscow Oblast, Russia, 119049' on Google maps and place the streetview peg between buildings no. '78' & '6'), just next to the site of City Clinical Hospital No. 1 named N.I. Pirogov. Leninskiy Prospekt, 8, Moscow, Russia, 119049. Some of the buildings here are part of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Dentistry department.

After a phone-call, they return to Katya's place. Here the car makes the turn from Ulitsa Verkhnyaya Maslovka between buildings 21 + 22. Moscow, Russia, 127083.

Barley and Jack walk across from in front of Novospassky Monastery (orthodox place of worship & former home church of the Romanovs, Russia's last Imperial family) located on Krest'yanskaya Ploshchad', 10, Moscow, Russia, 115172.

They proceed across Novospasskiy Proyezd (Novospassky Drive)...

...and down to the block of flats located on the corner of Novospasskiy Proyezd and 3-Y Krutitskiy Pereulok (3rd Krutitsky Lane).

Back in Lisbon, Barley goes to greet the freed Katya at the dockside. He is standing on Avenue Infante Dom Henrique, 1100-284 Lisboa, Portugal, right opposite the Doca Da Marinha (Navy dock).
