The village of Kirrary was a set built for the film. Cruach Mharthain (Croaghmarhin) near Dunquin on the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry, Ireland with Mount Eagle in the background. Information from www.in70mm.com

All that remains of the Kirrary village set now is the cobbled street and foundations of the buildings.

'Village idiot' Michael (John Mills) carries a lobster into fictional Kirrary. Set included for the sake of completeness.

With the exception of the church (which was fibreglass) all the buildings had to be built from stone to withstand the Atlantic storms.

Father Hugh Collins (Trevor Howard) rescues Michael from the villagers who have been teasing and taunting him. Set built north of Dunquin included for sake of completeness.

The set was demolished as it was built on a commonage and an agreement could not be reached with all the owners of the land over plans to preserve it as a tourist attraction.

Rosy and Charles make their way through Kirrary. This is on the hill of Cruach Mharthain, north of Dunquin in County Kerry, Ireland. The film's set required hundreds of workmen, as David Lean couldn't use any of the other, almost identical, villages in the area.

Lesley Roberts advises that this is all that remains of the High Street now.
