Saving Grace

Grace (Brenda Blethyn) is in the funeral procession as it makes its way slowly down Church Hill in Port Isaac.

The procession turns onto Fore Street in Port Isaac. RNLI Port Isaac Lifeboat station is on the left of frame.

It then continues further up Fore Street, past The Golden Lion public house.

Matthew sees the people walking from the headland. The white building is the National Coastwatch Institution (NCI) Boscastle Lookout station, Boscastle, Cornwall . . .

Lionel and Cynthia tell us that this is just to the north of Forrabury Church on National Trust land known as Forrabury Stitches. The NCI location seems to have no road access so the monitors must have to walk there which must be a pain at times. Not for Lionel it would seem for he did several years with the NCI at St Agnes! Following the burial, Matthew is walking with Harvey (Tristan Sturrock) along a lane across from Wetherham Manor, St Tudy which is Brenda Blethyn's house.

Dr Bamford (Martin Clunes) is smoking weed with Matthew in the grounds of Wetherham Manor, St Tudy, Cornwall. This film served as the inspiration for the long running Martin Clunes comedy drama series 'Doc Martin', which is also filmed in and around Port Isaac (but the village is called Portwenn in the show).

A month has passed and Grace (Brenda Blethyn) seems in a much better frame of mind as she leaves her house. Wetherham Manor, St Tudy, Cornwall.

She walks into the village. She heads down Church Hill in Port Isaac, Cornwall. In real life she is about 8 miles from her house, so that walk would take nearly 3 hours!

She then emerges from Roscarrock Hill. This is actually in the opposite direction from the previous shot.

In Middle Street with Roscarrock hill rising up from Lionel and Cynthia's left they were relieved to find that the 'Public Conveniences' were still there. (RL)

Grace is perplexed by the shunning of the locals as she goes through the town. This is the harbour front in Port Isaac.

Steps on the side of the Port Isaac Fishermen's Building in Middle Street. Lionel and Cynthia were left to wonder whether the steps were cleaned for filming or is that new growth. (RL)

The elderly village postman is bringing some bad news mail along Roscarrock Hill in Port Isaac.

The hilly streets of Port Isaac certainly tested Lionel and Cynthia's fitness, here scaling Roscarrrock Hill to look back down into the village. (RL)

Matthew is fighting the lawnmower repossession in the grounds of Wetherham Manor, St Tudy, Cornwall.

Out in the harbour at low tide looking back into the village. Lionel and Cynthia are standing on a causeway which is only accessible at low tide. As always, their timing was perfect. (RL)

Lionel and Cynthia have rather left us guessing as to whether the service is still taking place or whether it is over. (RL)

Brenda is shopping for supplies as Nicky spots her. The street in front is Fore Street in St Isaac. In real life the store that Grace was in is a gift shop called The Boathouse.

Harvey, Dr Bamford and Charlie (Paul Brooke) are stunned to see the unexpected light in the sky whilst standing at the top of the slipway, just off Fore Street in Port Isaac.

Grace finally catches up with Honey (Diana Quick) in St Symphorian's Church, Forrabury, Boscastle, Cornwall PL35 0DJ.

Matthew is rowing out to Nicky's fishing boat in Port Isaac harbour.

Grace and Nicky have a serious conversation on Port Isaac Fore Street, next to the Dennis Knight fish merchant.

Grace goes to London to try and sell her weed. She gets out of the taxi on Golborne Road, London W10 5SY. Trellick Tower apartment building is in the background.

Then she heads to the Market Bar on the corner of 240 Portobello Road and Lancaster Road, London W11 1LL. As of March 2021, this venue is the Ukai Japanese restaurant but Tris advises that the public house was originally called the Golden Cross before becoming Shannon's.

Tris provides this view adding that the former pub became Ukai sometime after 2015.

Having got into a different bit of trouble than she expected, Grace leaves the police station at 325 Harrow Road, London W9. The venue ceased operation as a police station in 2013 and was redeveloped as 'Westbourne Place', a contemporary residential apartment building.

Grace and Honey leave the house at a currently unidentified London location.

They head down under a flyover. Antony Blair locates this as The Battleship Building standing between Harrow Road and the A40 Westway in W2. Dating from the 1970, the building was originally named Canal House and can be seen in 'Entertaining Mr. Sloane', 'Give My Regards to Broad Street' and 'Side by Side'.

They are followed by Dr Bamford and Matthew as they keep their distance under the flyover. Harrow Road beneath the Westway recognised by Antony.

Vince (Bill Bailey) leads the pair to meet a dealer. Antony Blair identifies this as underneath the A40 as it passes through West London.

They are heading back to their village along what is likely to be the Cornish coast. This exact road is currently unidentified.

They pass along Port Gaverne PL29 3SQ.

Meanwhile Vince (Bill Bailey) is attempting to fake tail the other car with China (Jamie Foreman) giving him a hard time. This location is currently unidentified.

The propety businessman Quentin (Clive Merrison) arrives in Port Isaac by taxi from London.

As Lionel and Cynthia say, 'very similar to Capture 14. (RL)

Matthew is searching for Nicky in Port Issac and trying to save his relationship from the shore.

Bill Bailey still trying to divert and 'befriend' China outside Buttermilk confectionery shop on 4 Church Hill, Port Isaac in Cornwall PL29 3RQ.

At the end of a tiring day Lionel and Cynthia say goodbye to Middle Street as they look west to someone taking a picture of them. (RL)
