Sherlock Holmes and the Deadly Necklace

The scene is set with a familiar view, Tower Bridge spanning the River Thames in London.

A group of Children spot something in the harbour and ask the Fisherman to retrieve it. Facing the administration building of the Berliner Hafen und Lagerhausgesellschaft mbH, known as BEHALA, on Westhafenstraße in Berlin 13353.

The body of a man wearing a Thaysia pullover is pulled from the water. The pier projects into Basin II of the West Harbor from Westhafenstraße in front of the BEHALA administration building in the Moabit district of Berlin.

The Thaysia's cargo is unloaded after the voyage from Benghazi.

Along the quayside, Professor James Moriarty (Hans Söhnker) approaches the Thaysia.

Disguised as a stevedore, Sherlock Holmes (Christopher Lee) stands with Johnny Jenkins (Max Strassberg) as the Professor bumps into Samuels, a member of the ship's crew.

Returning to 221b Baker Street, Holmes peruses the shipping column in The Times to check on the Thaysia's movements. Pat Cleary identifies this dark scene as Henrietta Street in Dublin 1 adding that the street has appeared in many period films and television series down through the years including 'Quackser Fortune Has a Cousin in the Bronx', 1995's 'An Awfully Big Adventure' and 'The Man Who Invented Christmas' from 2017.

Following a clue left by the fatally wounded Jenkins, Holmes and Dr. Watson head to the Hare & Eagle public house. This appears to be a prop sign.

From the shadows, Holmes watches Moriarty as he arrives outside the pub to meet with Samuels. What appears to be a railway bridge passes at a skew to the top left.

Records at The Times are checked to find out when Professor Moriarty last visited Egypt. The long demolished newspaper offices of The Times at 160 Queen Victoria Street in London EC4.

Huntley Castle in the story's Hertfordshire countryside where Moriarty's chauffeur Charles is sent to spy on Peter Blackburn, a former associate of the Professor. Howth Castle, Dublin, discovered by Steve Randall.

Sherlock Holmes and the Doctor arrive at the nearby Huntley Arms and make contact with the local Police Inspector.

Returning to London after Blackburn's murder, Dr. John Watson (Thorley Walters) and Holmes wait outside Professor Moriarty's home until his car is seen to leave. Pat Cleary advises that these are the entrance gates to the Spanish Embassy on the corner of Ailesbury Road and Merrion Road in Dublin 4.

Taking this shot, Pat tells us that on the other side of the road stands St. Michael's College, famous for producing world class Irish rugby players.

The Doctor pulls away and begins to pursue the Rolls-Royce along the film's Park Lane Road. Ailesbury Road, Dublin identified by Pat Cleary.

Pat adds that the road leads down to the normally busy level crossing at Sydney Parade, at the far end just around to the left.

Holmes changes clothes in the back of the car as Charles is followed towards the city.

Through streets of well presented houses, Holmes and Watson keep up with Charles in their Daimler.

Having completed his make-up, Holmes signals to Dr. Watson. Temple Lane South in Dublin 2 with the corner of Cecilia Street on the right.

At a junction, Watson creates a distraction by running into the back of the Rolls-Royce. Temple Lane South with Essex Street East as it becomes Temple Bar crossing the background and Flannery's bar, now The Temple Bar, on the right corner.

Leaving Charles confronting Watson, Holmes searches for a taxi. Eustace Street in Dublin 2 with Berkel's shop at 19 Essex Street East visible through the windows of J. Timmins' bar. The bar is currently known as 'The Norseman'.

Crossing the grounds of the Professor's house, Holmes lets himself into the sumptuous property with the keys that he took from the Rolls-Royce. Steve Randall discovered Schloss Glienicke, Glienicke Palace, located on Königstraße near the Glienicke Bridge in Berlin, West Germany.

After recovering the Cleopatra necklace from Moriarty's mansion, Holmes returns to join Watson. Essex Street, now Essex Street East, in Dublin.

The priceless necklace is taken to Inspector Cooper at Scotland Yard before arrangements are made for it to be auctioned. Pat Cleary tells us that this sculpture sits on top of the rear exit from the Kings Inn Irish Law School on Henrietta Street, Dublin 1.

Holmes agrees to secretly meets with Moriarty on the day before the auction and the crook suggests a partnership with the criminologist.

One of Moriarty's Henchmen runs when Holmes sounds his whistle after declining the invitation.

After a disguised Holmes is recruited by Charles at the Hare & Eagle, a wagon rolls through city streets as Moriarty puts his plan into operation. Looking east on Essex Street West with the corner of Exchange Street Upper to the left.

In preparation to steal the necklace from the Inspector, Charles (Leon Askin) directs Holmes to unload equipment from the wagon. Essex Street West with St. Audeon's church in the left distance.

With this shot Mark says "re-development and Dublin City Council offices (which was shamefully built on the largest viking settlement ever discovered) now obscures the view of St Audeon's Church." (RL)

Carrying the necklace in its casket, Inspector Cooper climbs into the back of a secure police van. Pat Cleary explains that this is inside the parking area of the Bridewell Garda Station and Bridewell Courthouse on Chancery Street in Dublin 7.

Leaving Scotland Yard, the van sets out for Mosley's Auction House as Charles and Holmes climb down into the city's sewer system. Pat Cleary tells us that the white railings and windows in the background belong to the Land Registry building across Chancery Street, at the rear of the Iconic Four Courts.

At Mosley's Auction Rooms the auction commences. Cork Hill with Bedford Hall and the Castle Gate to the left and the Dublin City Council Rates Office, formerly the Newcomen Bank, on the right. Castle Gate also features in 'Shake Hands With the Devil'.

The Inspector's van arrives outside the auction house. Pat Cleary found Castle Street, Dublin 2 with Dublin Castle Gate off to the left. The popular filming location where scenes for 'Enter Inspector Duval' and 'Shake Hands with the Devil' were shot.

60 years later, the lamps remain in situ as Pat discovered.

After the necklace realises over £140,000, Moriarty escorts the Buyer to his car. The Cork Hill entrance to City hall, opposite the Council Rates Offices.

Mark very patiently waited for the coach to move so that he could capture the full glory of the lamp standard....but.....next time he says. (RL)
