Shining, The
Date: 1980
Director: Stanley Kubrick
Production Company: Warner Bros
Stars: Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd, Scatman Crothers, Barry Nelson, Philip Stone, Joe Turkel
Location(s): Oregon, Montana, Elstree
Region(s): N. America, South East R-Z
Storyline:
Isolation turns writer against his family, including his son who has an ESP gift, who are trapped curating a hotel over a deep long winter. SJ
Additional Information:
The 146 mins version is clearer, and thus more preferable, than the 119 mins version.
Most of these stills aim to settle a lot of the confusion which has arisen from the locations actually used or not used.
Stephen King based his hotel on the Stanley, Estes Park, Colorado but none of the film was shot there. However some of the 1996 TV version was, as was Dumb and Dumber. Kubrick’s version runs on a special channel in a loop on TV in every bedroom.
Can you help:
If you have any information regarding this production, the locations or, even better, some comparison shots please contact us. Images submitted must be in Landscape orientation, as would be seen on the cinema screen, not Portrait.
We are aware that there are films on the site that were added when the criteria for the inclusion of locations was very different from today and, as a result, there may be scenes missing from some productions. Please do not forward additional screen captures to us but bring the detail to our attention, for we do, and are, 're-addressing' these older entries as time allows.

Saint Mary Lake, Glacier National Park, Montana, USA. Lovely second unit helicopter shots. The lake is west of St Mary off highway 89. And Nicholson's car is on Glacier Route 1, known rather charmingly as Going-to-the-Sun Road. The island in the lake is west of The Narrows.

Another aerial shot. Suddenly we're in a different state. Timberline Lodge, open all year round, on Mount Hood, Oregon. Exterior aerial shots only were used for the film.
Sensibly brother Robin went to visit at a warm time of year. RJ

The lobby of the hotel. Nicholson is entering a set in Elstree but the decor, including columns, chandeliers, floor pattern, is heavily based on the Awhanee Hotel, Yosemite, California. The "now" shot is perhaps best taken at the hotel if only to see the similarities.

An additional still, as I missed this state with apologies to the itinerant 2nd unit. Neil Webster provided both the capture and location info. Torrance's apartment. Kensington Apartment Homes, 2950 Bixby Lane, Boulder, Colorado, USA. Looking W towards The Flatirons and Green Mountain.

Another establishing shot of Mount Hood.
Brother Simon went in February but matched the shot of shin002n. SJ

Looks the same as The Timberline but no, it's a set in Hertfordshire, England, along with a specially built maze seen on the right.
Not a now! Brother Robin in search for a maze. Wrong side of the Atlantic. RJ

Nicholson, Duvall and Nelson on the set based on the Timberline.
Not a now! Rather the entrance to the Timberline as opposed to the set. And one can see they really don't even look the same. RJ

Duvall and Lloyd play in the snow, actually salt which melted the real snow that fell in winter 1979.
Also seaching in vain. Not a now but a nice wintry scene. One of the longest US ski-ing seasons is up here, and I'm not surprised. SJ

Crothers at what could be Stansted Airport. With thanks to Bryant Arnett and his excellent webpage The "Real" Overlook Hotel. Robin Brigham adds that this is the old terminal at Stansted.

More fakery as Duvall pushes Lloyd out of the bathroom window.
Looking for the escape window in vain. Not there, never was. RJ
