After driving through New England, Mike Kelton (Gig Young) and his wife Susannah (Carol Lynley) arrive to catch a ferry to the island where she was born. Terry Davis adds that this is Harty Ferry whilst confirming SJ's identification of Oare Marshes Nature reserve, Kent.

Mike looks for the ferryman. Confirmed by Terry as the Harty Ferry slip road, north of Oare, Kent. Terry lived just up the road as a child and was there when filming took place. He's recently written a book titled 'A Long Road Home' and some of the scenes are set at the location.

Lacking a suitable crane to reproduce the then, I thought I'd attempt to reproduce the curve of the estuary. Without success, as this "now" is facing north from the boathouse and the "then" looks east. But it captures the bleakness. SJ

Ethan Whately (Oliver Reed) goes to his Aunt Agatha to check that he will inherit an old mill after finding that Susannah is his cousin. One of the two South Foreland Lighthouses, St Margaret's Bay, Dover identified by members of the Britmovie Forum.
This is not the accessible National Trust one but the lower one shut down in 1910 after a leading light experiment was felt inaccurate. SJ

An absolute nightmare to get to as it's on private land, a house called Dolphin's Leap. I scrambled round the cliff edge to avoid trespass and a zoom lens helped. SJ
