Stalls of Barchester, The

Dr. Black (Clive Swift) makes his way towards Barchester Cathedral library for his final day cataloguing the disappointing collection of books and manuscripts. Looking from the old Refectory onto Lower Close in Norwich, Norfolk.

The scholar passes through an archway and into The Close. Seen through Erpingham Gate on Tombland, the spire of Norwich Cathedral rises above the nave.

Nick was surprised "Who would have thought that there would be a change in such a view?"

The Doctor enters the library where the Librarian eventually brings out a box of documents pertaining to a now deceased Archdeacon at the Cathedral. Malcolm Tinnelly advises that this is one of the exits from the Cloisters at Norwich Cathedral.

Opening the box, Dr. Black reads in Dr. Haynes' diary that he arrived in Barchester in 1872 with his sister Letitia to take up residence as a Junior Deacon. Malcolm Tinnelly confirms that this is the view from within the Cloisters at Norwich Cathedral.

Whilst lining up this shot, Malcolm was fortunate enough to see one of the Cathedral's resident Peregrine Falcons flying around the spire.

Living to a great age, Archdeacon Dr. Pulteney (Harold Bennett) leaves his house in the Cathedral Close. Abbeyfield House at number 57, The Close in Norwich.

The Deacon and his sister Letitia Haynes (Thelma Barlow) pass the Archdeacon’s house where he opens the door and calls "Good morning" to the younger man.

The wall has also disappeared in Nick's comparison.

As time advances, Letitia speaks to Dr. Haynes of Methuselah, a man who lived to a great age. Bishopgate on the corner by St. Peter's Chapel which is situated next to the Vestry at the South Transept of Norwich Cathedral located by Manuel Gurtner.

As the autumn of 1880 approaches, arrangements are made for the Archdeacon's sister to stay with her cousin Henrietta in Brighton for the winter. Before she departs, Dr. Haynes assures Letitia that he will keep himself occupied by completing his book. The Cloisters at Norwich Cathedral located by Malcolm Tinnelly.

Returning to the Cloisters, Malcolm captured the scene.

While looking out the window, Dr. Haynes sees Jane Lee (Penny Service), Pulteney's former housemaid, and soon after becomes troubled by an uncomfortable impression of company in his rooms.

An old Priest (Eric Chitty) explains to Dr. Haynes that restored carvings in the stalls at the Cathedral were sculpted by Austin the Twice Born out of wood from the felled hanging oak.

Returning from the Deanery late one evening, Dr. Haynes arrives home to be plagued by whispers.

Concluding his reading of Dr. Haynes diary and discovering that the carvings are now missing from the Cathedral stalls, Dr. Black makes his way to the local museum where he learns that they were removed following a fire. Elm Hill, Norwich outside the former St. Peter Hungate church, then the Museum of Church Art, now styled as Hungate Medieval Art.
