Stop Press Girl

In the sleepy village of Slipfold, a noisy sports car comes into view across the brook. Looking across The Green in Finchingfield, Essex with Church Hill leading to St. John the Baptist church in the centre.

As he passes dentist Arthur Peters in his trap, the engine of Roy Fairfax's car upsets the horse. The Green in Finchingfield with the bridge crossing Finchingfield Brook beyond The Fox Inn.

The intrusive vehicle turns from the main road.

Arriving early, Roy turns to park outside the house of his fiancée Jennifer Peters as she rides up to the front gate. This is West Common in Gerrard's Cross, Buckinghamshire.

Jennifer climbs into the car beside the junior partner of Fairfax & Sons, timepiece manufacturers. The village of Aldbury, Hertfordshire identified by Geoff Dodds. Phil found that the farm building(s) had be converted to private residences and the number of cars had increased. (RL)

Fifteen minutes into their journey, the engine stops and the car glides to a halt.

Discussing their future on the way, Jennifer Peters (Sally Ann Howes) and Roy Fairfax (Nigel Buchanan) walk back to the house where Roy meets Mr. Peters. Latchmoor House on West Common, Gerrard's Cross in Buckinghamshire. The location is seen in 'One Good Turn' and 'Wombling Free' while Latchmoor House appears in 'Made in Heaven'.

After Roy runs from the house, Jennifer follows him to London by train. The first of two often seen stock shots.

The train rushes through a station before coming to a stand in the countryside.

Journalist Angela Carew (Sonia Holm) and Jennifer leave the train and hitch a lift. Looking over the railway bridge on Potkiln Lane south of Jordans to the east of Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire.

In the Capital, Jennifer alights from a bus as the Driver (Basil Radford) and Conductor (Naunton Wayne) puzzle over the stalled engine. A studio shot showing off the film’s "independent frame" technique, which was a form of back projection.

Having met Jennifer on the train, Morning Sun reporter Jock Meville arrives outside the hotel where she is staying. Dave W provides the location as Endsleigh Street, London WC1 telling us that it would have been the Westway Hotel at the time of filming. (RL)

Having established the location Dave provides us with a shot of the scene now. Essentially the same despite changes of building occupation and access. In the gap on the extreme right Euston Square is undergoing another round of changes. (RL)

When she witnesses a smash and grab raid, the Thieves take Jennifer captive and speed away. Facing southward on St. James's Street in SW1 with St. James’s Palace in the distance.

As Jock's car is commandeered by a Constable, the Robbers continue to flee. Looking along Marlborough Road SW1 towards St. James’s Park and The Mall. The road also appears in 'Who Goes There?' and 'Wedding Rehearsal'.

Building works to left prevented a precise shot but a nice deserted street for standing in the middle of the road. SJ

A radio broadcast alerts patrolling Officers. Millbank in London SW1 with the corner of Ponsonby Place to the left.

The corner is still occupied by The Morpeth Arms. The bus-stop has grown and there looks like some alteration between the ground and first floor of 55 Millbank. SJ

Receiving the message, the police car is turned in the street to head for Chelsea Embankment. In front of the Tate Gallery, now Tate Britain, on Millbank. The building is seen in 'Escape Route', 'The Fake', 'Fun at St. Fanny's', 'Food for a Blush', ‘Bean’, 'How to Undress in Public Without Undue Embarrassment' and ‘The Horse's Mouth’.

Not such an elegant entrance at the base of the steps, perhaps temporary. SJ

The Crooks head south of the river. Albert Bridge Road in SW11, looking north over Albert Bridge as it links Battersea and Chelsea across the Thames.

Smart lampposts have appeared. SJ

Motorcycle cops speed past on their way to intercept the Criminals. Cambridge Street in Pimlico SW1 with the corner of Gloucester Street in the centre and the spire of St. Gabriel's church to the top right.

The towering Russell House now completed on the left. SJ

With bells ringing, the patrol car speeds towards the camera. Looking north along Denbigh Street SW1.

With restored building to the left. SJ

The shot pans with the patrol car as the Motorcycle Officers join the pursuit. Looking along Lupus Street from the junction of St. George's Drive and Denbigh Street in Pimlico with the corner of Ranelagh Road to the centre. SJ points out that a different view of the same corner was seen in 'Hunted' . . . .

. . . and this is the corner now. SJ

With the Policeman giving direction, Jock continues to follow. Facing north along Queenstown Road from Queen's Circus in SW11. The location is also seen in 'Seventy Deadly Pills'.

The getaway car swings around a corner. The sign reads Searle Street, a lost street in the Borough of Battersea, and this looking north from the junction with Ethelburga Street towards Parkgate Road with the corner of Perevil Street in the centre. The location is now covered by the Ethelburga Estate.

This is now Searle Court and possibly the road is now a little more to the left/west than the previous street. SJ

When the engine stops, the Crooks (Michael Balfour and Robert Vernon) and their Boss (Dennis Val Norton) get out of their car, leaving Jennifer on the back seat. To the left stand the long demolished numbers 11 to 19 Ethelburga Street in SW11.

The paved area is now wider than the original road. SJ

Running from the car, the Thieves stop when the engine springs back into life as Jennifer passes out. Facing east on Ethelburga Street with the corner of Searle Street in the left background and Stafford Mansions on Albert Bridge Road in the distance beyond.

I'm not quite sure why I'm standing on the south pavement instead of the north but here's Ethelburga Street now and it turns to the right rather than going straight on as it used to. SJ

Stopping behind the getaway car, Jock rushes to put the handbrake on and rescue Jennifer. Ethelburga Street with a row of Uni-Seco prefabs on the southern side of the road.

This has replaced the pre-fabs. SJ

With the chase over, the criminals are arrested and driven away. Ethelburga Street in SW11 with the junction of Battersea Bridge Road and Hyde Lane to the left. The building just visible behind the centre property is Battersea Bridge Road Police Station.

A new road has appeared to the right with Battersea Bridge Road passing between the modern red-brick corner building and lawn. Looking west into the sun. SJ

Overtaking the abandoned getaway car, Jock drives Jennifer from the scene. Facing west on Ethelburga Street towards Battersea Bridge Road.

And what a relief, there's a building still standing to prove I'm correctly located. Here on the left is the rear of The Union Arms, 109 Bridge Road, still going as Union. SJ

A traffic jam is caused by Jock's car when, after fifteen minutes, the engine cuts out. Park Lane W1 with the Dorchester Hotel to the right.

At the offices of The Evening Comet, Angela Carew is given the task of beating the Morning Sun's story about Jennifer. Looking east along Fleet Street in EC4.

Followed to London Zoo by Angela, Roy and Jennifer meet up.

The pair part company after leaving the zoo before Angela persuades Roy to give her a lift. The entrance to London Zoo in Regent's Park NW1.

Agreeing to help as an air hostess, Jennifer joins the inaugural flight of a new Air Bus service. With the help of aviation enthusiasts at PPRUNE.ORG, Brendan Goldsmith identifies the airfield as RAF Bovingdon at Bovingdon in Hertfordshire.

Having found out that Jennifer is intending to fly, Mr. Peters and his sister Mab rush to the airfield. RAF Bovingdon to the south-west of Hemel Hempstead located by Brendan Goldsmith.

The horse drawn milk float carries Arthur and Jennifer's aunt towards the plane. Brendan Goldsmith recognised RAF Bovingdon near Hemel Hempstead.

After Jennifer's strange power is disclosed to the world, newspapers carry opposing stories about the faculty being either fake or a miracle. Dave W chastises himself for being so slow in spotting this as St Pancras New Church in Upper Woburn Place WC1, as seen from Endsleigh Gardens. (RL)

As Jock and Jennifer head off on their honeymoon, the train they are travelling on comes to a stand . . . . at a signal.
