As the clock strikes 9 am, Thompson (Roy Holder) runs from the flat where he lives with his mother Bella and the lodger Mr. Chard. York Street, Dublin 2 looking towards the junction with Aungier Street and Whitefriar Place located by Tony Hanna.

Late for school, Thompson sprints through rain dampened streets of the nameless northern city

As the titles appear around him, the youngster keeps up his pace.

A corner is turned. St. Michael's Lane in Dublin 8, now St. Michael's Close, with Winetavern Street to the left.

Due to buildings that have been constructed over the intervening years, this is the best comparison that Tony Hanna could take.

The shot follows Thompson as he climbs a hill. St. Michael's Lane, a location also seen in 'Shake Hands With the Devil', with the towers of Christchurch Cathedral and Synod Hall in the background.

This is Misery Hill in Dublin 2, crossed by Forbes Street in the foreground with the gas works to the right. Misery Hill also features in 'Educating Rita' and 'The Face of Fu Manchu'.

Tony Hanna returned to the location and found a very different scene.

The camera watches the boy as he reaches Hanover Quay with Great Canal Dock to right. The location can be seen from a distance in 'Ulysses'.

Appearing at the end of a cul-de-sac, the bright young pupil runs down a short set of steps. Bella Street in Dublin 1 found by Tony Hanna. The steps still exist at the end of Plás Chnoc an tSamhraidh but the end of the street was fenced in during to mid-2010s.

Thompson reaches East Secondary Modern School and slips into the hall where assembly is already under way. Located by Tony Hanna, this is Bella Street with the Rutland Street Nation School filling the background.

The gates have been replaced, however, Tony Hanna managed to get this shot through the fence that remains.

Staying safe on the pavement, Tony Hanna looks the same way.

Graham Weir enters the railway Arms across the road from the school. The bar at 36 Amiens Street is still open and looks very much the same.

After she asks is she can attend night school, Mr. Weir follows Shirley Taylor (Sarah Miles) from school at the end of the day. This is the station yard off Amiens Street.

The following day, watched by Shirley from a shop doorway, Mr. Weir runs to his car in the pouring rain.

On another day, Shirley walks alone to school. Tony Hanna locates this as Mercer Street, looking towards the junction of South William Street and King Street in Dublin 2 with Mercer's Hospital to the left.

Grabbed by Collins (Clive Colin Bowler), the young Woman is dragged into a derelict building where Mitchell is waiting. Tony Hanna explains that the derelict building stands on Mercer Street as indicated by the top floor of Mercer's Hospital visible to the top left.

Shirley makes her way to the home of Mr. Weir for a lesson. Looking north on Sallymount Avenue in the Ranelagh area of Dublin located by Mark Cummins.

Pat Cleary found that not much has changed here after 63 years other than tall neatly trimmed hedges and a new gate to number 8.

Reaching the front door, Shirley is let in by Anna Weir. Identified by Mark Cummins, this is number 8 Warwick Terrace on Sallymount Avenue, Dublin 6.

Replacing Mark's Google capture, Pat Cleary found the building looking a little less bare with extra foliage, a wreath on the door and pot plants adding that this residence dates from 1862 and sold for just under €2m in 2023.

When Chard threatens him whilst he's doing his homework, Thompson leaves the flat. Tony Hanna identifies this as York Street, Dublin 2.

In the absence of the long demolished building seen in the screen capture, Tony provides this shot of the replacement.

During the Easter half-term break. Mr. Trowman leads a party of pupils on a visit to Paris while the Headmaster takes another group to Belgium. Place de la Concorde in the 8th arrondissement of Paris, France.

Arm in arm the two make their way to find a café. Looking towards Place du Carrousel with the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel standing in the centre distance.

Over coffee, Shirley tells Mr. Weir that he has charm and she likes being with him.

Feeling uneasy about Shirley's conversation, Mr. Weir takes her to see the Eiffel Tower. Facing the Eiffel Tower on Champ de Mars in the 5th arrondissement with Place du Trocadero in the distance beyond the Seine.

From the top of the Eiffel Tower, views of Paris are taken in. Looking from the viewing platform near the top of the 1,063 feet tall structure with Pont de l'Alma crossing the River Seine to the right. The bridge was reconstructed as a wider girder bridge between 1970 and 1974.

Travelling by bus, the pair reach the river. Looking towards Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris on the Île de la Cité from Pont de la Tournelle crossing the Seine between the 5th and 4th arrondissements.

After a full afternoon of sightseeing, the teacher takes Shirley back to her hotel.

As they part company, Mr. Weir tells his pupil that he'll be dining with Mr. Trowman before turning in.

Returning to England, Mr. Weir leans out of the carriage window to open the door as the train pulls into the London terminus too late for a connection to the north. Westland Row station on Westland Row, Dublin 2 with the since removed bay platform 5 to the left. The station also appears in 'Ulysses', 'Johnny Nobody' and ‘Angela’s Ashes’.

Outside Mr. Weir's hotel window, a train passes before Shirley knocks at the door. The Diesel Multiple Unit could be travelling over the route between Westland Row and Amiens Street stations but redevelopment makes a more accurate identification difficult.

The following morning, at Euston station Mr. Weir buys refreshments for the journey home. Westland Row station in Dublin 2 with the ramp to Sandwith Street in the background.

The last of the Children board the train as Mr. Weir makes his way to join them. Westland Row station was renamed Dublin Pearse in 1966 and the station is also seen in 'Nora', 'Michael Collins', 'Johnny Nobody', 2007's 'Lassie' and 'Angela's Ashes'.

Despite the absence of moving traffic in shot, Pat Cleary tells us that this was not a child friendly road for a great many years.

Pat Cleary explains that, behind the houses to the left is the Royal Hospital established in the mid-18th Century.

Graham Weir is led away following Shirley's accusations about what happened at the London hotel. Looking from the steps of 8 Warwick Terrace on Sallymount Lane in Ranelagh, Dublin 6 discovered by Mark Cummins.

At the police station, Keirnan charges Weir with an assault on Miss Taylor before handing him over to Inspector Ullyat. This is Dún Laoghaire in County Dublin where the police station stands off George's Street Upper. The spire belongs to the Mariners' church on Haigh Terrace and the Royal Marine Hotel can be seen in the left background. A little more of the church appears in 'Enter Inspector Duval'.

The shot tilts down to find the deflated man as he leaves the station on bail. The police station and its access have since given way to redevelopment but the church and hotel remain.

Before his trial, Mr. Weir wanders the streets looking though the windows of coffee bars where young People are enjoying themselves. Tony Hanna recalls filming taking place and identifies this as the corner of South William Street and Chatham Row in Dublin 2.

Tony returned to the former coffee bar which is now the Metro Café. With thanks to the management and staff for allowing this and the following comparison views to be taken.

Teenagers dance to rock music playing on a jukebox. Working on nearby Grafton Street at the time of filming, Tony Hanna recognised what is now the Metro Café the corner of South William Street and Chatham Row.

Now, the Metro Café which has been trading since 1996, captured by Tony who enjoyed three pancakes and a white coffee.

Moving on, Mr. Weir passes Young Men staring at glamour magazines in a newsagent's window.

For a moment, a display outside a cinema attracts the master's attention. The seemingly wallpapered building end and the awkwardly placed cinema bearing the names Royal and De Luxe suggest a set at Ardmore Studios.
