That Summer!

Jimmy (Tony London) is about to be lambasted by his dad for not helping in the shop located at the end of The Fairway on Oldfields Circus in Northolt, Greater London. Location identified by Andrew Price. Andrew also mentions that the next exterior scene (not shown on the RS site) that takes place behind some buildings is in fact using the real area just behind the shop shown here.

As soon as the location had been identified, Antony Blair paid a visit.

Having finished his term in borstal (a type of youth detention centre), Steve (Ray Winstone) emerges from Westbourne Park Station, Great Western Road, London W11. Also seen in 'Seven Days to Noon'. (RL)

Tris provides a clearer, daylight view of the location.

He walks through Holmefield House at the top of Golborne Road, between Hazlewood Crscent and Kensal Road, London W10 with the Trellick Tower in the background. Identified in detail by Neil Rigby. (RL)

Website visitor Richard Bennett supplied this shot which seems to be the best possible view considering the subsequent tree growth. Also he mentions that the estate is gated, so that makes a more screen accurate picture extremely difficult or even impossible.

Steve is determined to leave London and head down to the south west for the summer, getting a lift from a London street corner that may well be located somewhere in Hammersmith. Antony Blair confirms the location as under the Hammersmith flyover, looking from Hammersmith Bridge Road across to Bridge Avenue Mansions.

He arrives at Torquay in Devon and gets out on Torbay Road. This location is across the road from the bowls green featured in the film 'Blackball'.

Lick of paint but other than that nothing very different.

He heads down to the beach, with Torquay in the background.

Not much beach to walk on when the tide comes crashing in!

He wanders along Cary Parade and into a local amusement arcade and gets his initial taste of local trouble. The amusement arcade is currently called 'Bazaar'.

Hard to get closer to cut out the palm trees as the road visible outside the arcade and the one just below the camera frame are very busy. This took about 8 shots to try and time it without traffic inc. buses getting in the way!

Meanwhile a coach carrying several other main characters arrives and see the initial view of Torquay harbour.

Carl Arney once again provides another great updated location shot. He says he took the picture at the top of the boat slip, adjacent to the junction between The Strand and Vaughan Parade (the pedestrianised part of the former Vaughan Road), facing Torquay harbour.

This was one of the shots where a balance had to be struck between avoiding the early morning sun messing up the shot and attempting to frame it like it looks in the film.

If I took one step to the right, the sun rays pretty much whited out the frame.

Now off the coach, Emily Moore (Carole) and Julie Shipley (Angie) walk up a hill in Torquay. One of the trickiest locations to pin down, website vistor and Torquay resident Carl Arney managed to work out that this is looking down Braddons Hill Road W, Torquay. Carl also points out this scene seemed to be photographed in a way that shortened the depth of field (possibly with a zoom lens), as the reduced focal length distorts how this location looks in real life and thus made it hard to identify.

Carl Arney ventured out to snap defining evidence that this is indeed the correct location at Braddons Hill Road W, Torquay.

Jimmy is now driving his car fast along Ellacombe Church Road in Torquay . . . .

Nice and simple with the railings still there (and the sun behind me!)

. . . . and turns down onto Victoria Road where he gets pulled over by the police.

You can see the sun rays almost ruining the shot. But the background pretty much matches.

Ray Winstone goes to his first part time job at the Pickwick Pub. As of 2019, the venue is called Twiggy's Bar and is located at Pimlico, Torquay TQ1.

Very little difference other than a new lick of paint.

Having eaten at the pub, Steve goes to the harbour and investigates a long distance championship swim event.

It was quite hard matching some of the buildings in the middle ground, but the passing of time has likely seen some of the buildings change, plus the original film is not currently available in a higher resolution.

The next morning, Steve wakes up at the lodging he has at the pub which also offers a nice view down on to Torquay harbour. Ray Cutler says that this is definitely NOT a view out of The Pimlico, it is more likely a view from Warren Road. (RL)

Carl Arney has produced a rather excellent now shot of the same location which he thinks is the same as in the movie, which would be Rock Walk, above Cary Parade in Torquay.

Steve sets off for a swim, first running down a currently unidentified street . . . Ray advises that this is Melville Street, Torquay, as is Capture 18 just a few feet back from this and is true to continuity. (RL)

Again framing quite near but the sun dictated that no closer replication was going to be possible.

Quite close, mainly matching with the remaining buildings in the middle ground.

. . . . to continue to run along Babbacombe Road at the junction with Stitchill Road in Torquay. Carl Arney again managed to solve this elusive location that had proved difficult to pin down.

He then gets on the Babbacombe Cliff Railway car to arrive at Oddicombe Beach in Torquay. Built in 1926, the Babbacombe Cliff Railway has shuttled hundreds of thousands of holiday makers in over 90 years of service.

Meanwhile Angie and Carole are being shown the ropes at the The Imperial Torquay hotel on Parkhill Road, Torquay.

Carole and Angie go down to the Oddicombe beach where they decide to hire a beach float.

Having left the pub, Carole and Angie walk down what seems to be the alleyway at 22 Victoria Parade on the harbour in Torquay . . .

The right hand painted pillar helped find this location.

. . . and then head up Victoria Parade towards Torquay town centre, whilst trying to avoid being harassed.

The front of the building jutting out really helped in the original location identification.

Realising that she is running late after spending the night with Steve, Angie runs to work along Beacon Hill in Torquay. Part of the old and infamous Coral Island attraction is visible on the left. Since 2003 the 'Living Coasts' attraction has stood on the site.

Angie continues up the hill where Beacon Hill becomes Parkhill Road . . .

Wall seems to have been replaced since filming.

. . . . to arrive at the entrance to the Imperial Hotel. Continuity is good and all three of these running shots are geographically accurate to the target location.

And exact shot replication hampered once again by the creeping morning sun...

After a disagreement about swimming training vs dates, Angie shouts at Steve as he walks off along Pimlico, Torquay..

Tam (Jon Morrison) and his two mates Georgie (Andrew Byatt) and Stu (Ewan Stewart) hatch a plot to plant a wallet stolen from Steve and so they break into a chemist property. Website visitor Carl Arney helpfully identified this location as being just off 282 Union Street in Torre, Torquay. He also mentions that the near window has long been bricked up and the building is currently Carter's convenience store. Although if you look closely at the front of the building, you can still make out evidence of the business that was there when the film was made, as some of the decorative glass still bears product terms used by the chemists.

Carl Arney again managed not only to name this location but took some time out to grab an up-to-date to cement his find!

Carol and Angie discuss the previous nights events as they walk through a currently unidentified area that may be close to Meadfoot Beach near Torquay.

The police wrongly think that Steve was responsible for the break in and so attempt to catch him by going to the harbour to board a boat. Various parts of Torquay, including the harbour, appear in 'Brandy for the Parson', 'Last Holiday' and 'The System'.
