A remote snowy airbase that is supposed to be on the Russian border between Afghanistan and the Soviet Union is in fact the only altiport (an aerodrome for small planes & helicopters, situated on or within mountainous terrain) in the Pyrenees called Peyresourde-Balestas. It is located in, Louderccitanie in southern France. In 2017, the 20th anniversary of Bond filming there was marked by the altiport being renamed 'Altiport 007'.

The sculptor was John Bacon and the statue was erected between 1778 and 1789.

The Car chase around the multistory car park was shot in several locations. Bond arrives at a US Airbase near the South China Sea . . . except in reality this is RAF Lakenheath, Suffolk, UK. In addition Michael Bradley pointed out that HMS Westminster, a Portsmouth-based Type 23 Frigate ship, doubled for all the Royal Navy ships seen in the film (the fictional ships being named HMS Chester, HMS Devonshire and HMS Bedford. The latter of which in the story is sent to the South China Sea). In addition a young Gerard Butler makes an appearance as Leading Seaman on H.M.S. Devonshire.

There has been a suggestion that the thin tall rock to the left of the frame is Ko Ta Pu, as featured near Christopher Lee's beach in The Man With the Golden Gun. Although in this shot it looks taller than Ko Ta Pu seems to be, so it may be an inaccurate identification.
