A reserved bank manager is swept into a whirlwind of international adventures and eccentric schemes by his flamboyant Aunt Augusta as they travel across Europe, uncovering family secrets and engaging in dubious activities.

After his mother's funeral, assistant bank manager Henry Pulling (Alec McCowan) meets Augusta Bertram (Maggie Smith) who claims to be his aunt. Islington & St. Pancras Cemetery, High Road, East Finchley N2.

Neil Kenny advises that the grave to the left is that of Mary Elizabeth Hall, 30th March 1914 (65), and her husband William Thomas Hall 22nd July 1916 (71).

Henry leaves with Aunt Augusta. High Road, East Finchley where Antony Blair advises that the background properties are numbers 341, 343 and 345.

Antony returned to the location 53 years later to find that the tree has increased in girth somewhat.

Augusta takes Henry to her place. She lives above The Salisbury, 90 St. Martin's Lane WC2. The pub is also to be seen in 'Victim'.

Augusta decides to take the Orient Express to Istanbul with Henry. After dining in the Restaurant Le Train Bleu, they board at Gare de Lyon, Paris. The platform scenes were shot in Delicias Station, Paseo de las Delicias, 61, Madrid. This was a redundant station at the time, which became a railway museum in 1984. Manuel Gurtner adds that the broad-gauge movie train consists, among some RENFE carriages, of two CIWL sleeping cars, No 3309 of WL type S3 (originally of type S1, Nivelles 1927) and No 3361 of WL type S4 (Birmingham 1928).

The train travels through a tunnel in a mountainous region. Simplon Railway south ramp between Preglia and Varzo in the Piemont region of Italy identified by Manuel Gurtner, with the snow-capped mountain range with Pizzo Diei (2905 m) and Monte Cistella (2880 m) in the far distance. The 40m long bridge spanning the river Diveria and the Strada Statale 659, while the southern portal of the San Giacomo tunnel is visible in the background.

The journey continues past Lake Maggiore, Italy. Manuel Gurtner explains that this is on the Simplon railway between Baveno and Stresa, Piemont region. The train is hauled by Bo'Bo'Bo' articulated loco of FS class E.646 with the express train consisting, among others, of SBB light steel carriages of type EW1. In the far distance, Isola Superiore can be made out.

Mario (Raymond Gerome) arrives at Milan Station. He is the son of Augusta's true love Ercole Visconti. She believes Ercole has been kidnapped and is smuggling money to pay his ransom. Looking out from Milan Central Station towards Piazza IV Novembre.

Carrying a package, Mario walks through the station concourse. Manuel Gurtner tells us that this is Milano Centrale station where the camera shortly begins a pan towards the monumental train shed.

Mario has a hurried discussion with Augusta at a bar next to the platform. Delicias Station, Madrid, which also appears in 'Horror Express' and ‘Dr. Zhivago’ as well as a number of Spanish productions.

Augusta recalls a romantic encounter with Ercole in Venice. The lagoon bridge called Ponte della Libertà, which connects Venice with the mainland at Mestre The location can also be seen in 'Summertime'.

The train pulls into Edirne Station, Turkey, where officials confiscate the smuggled money and deport Augusta and Henry back to France. Manuel Gurtner ponders that this is likely to have been shot somewhere near Madrid Delicias station as at the end of the train a RENFE baggage car of type DD-8000 can be seen again.
