Malachi "Buck" Mulligan (T.P. McKenna) appears on the roof of the Martello Tower where he lives carrying a bowl of lather, a mirror and a razor. The Martello Tower, which had become the James Joyce Tower and Museum in 1962, at Sandycove near Dún Laoghaire in County Dublin.

Pat Cleary (PC) discovered a very large tree which prevented an exact angle.

Pat Cleary explains that a section of the wall was demolished to allow for an entrance to the new museum shop.

Haines comments to Dedalus that they ought to laugh at the blasphemous Mulligan. Sandycove Point above Forty Foot Beach at Sandycove, County Dublin.

On a sunny afternoon the Forty Foot area was busy with enthusiastic swimmers and walkers but there was a momentary lucky break for Pat Cleary (PC) to take this shot.

Dedalus walks from school after headmaster Mr. Deasy asks him to use his influence to get a letter published in the press.

Catching up with Dedalus, the opinionated Garrett Deasy (David Kelly) makes comment about Ireland being the only country that has never persecuted the Jews.

Writing in his notebook, Leopold Bloom (Milo O'Shea) appears from a shop doorway.

Catching up with Bloom, Bantam Lyons (Desmond Perry) borrows his newspaper to peruse the racing pages.

Leaving Bantam to run to his bookie with what he believes is a tip, Bloom walks away after reading a poster for his soprano Wife's appearance in Belfast, presented by Hugh "Blazes" Boylan.

Dedalus recites poetry in his head as he walks along the rocky shore. Seen from Killiney Hill in County Dublin, Pat Cleary identifies Killiney Bay with the two Sugar Loafs in the distance and Bray Head hidden by the tall tree to the left. The view is almost replicated in 'Quackser Fortune Has a Cousin in the Bronx'.

Pat took this comparison from Killiney Hill in which we see Killiney Bay and beach with views of Bray Head, the Small Sugar Loaf and Great Sugar Loaf mountains in County Wicklow.

Opening his eyes after walking with the aid of a stick, Dedalus remembers that he has Garrett Deasy's letter for the press . . . and then . . . the pub at half past twelve. The beach off Strand Road in Sandymount, Dublin which also features in '30 Is a Dangerous Age, Cynthia'.

Pat Cleary explains that since the 1960s land reclamation and excellent redevelopment along this shoreline makes this area a walker's or runner's paradise.

Walking up from the beach, Dedalus walks past a Girl, hardly giving her a glance. The slip to the beach on Strand Road in Sandymount. The beach to the right has since been reclaimed and a grassed area now extends towards the sea.

A bright and very attractive colour scheme all around this house. PC

A slight change to the front door area but definitive proof that this is No. 41! PW

As the cortège travels through the streets, two Gentlemen raise their hats.

Seeing Simon's son walking on the beach as they pass, Bloom imagines his own deceased son Rudy (Louis Moiselle) with his mother Molly Bloom (Barbara Jefford). St. Stephen's Green in Dublin 2 located by Pat Cleary (PC).

Pat found some nice colours and water reflections in the park on a sunny morning.

When asked where they are when the carriage stops momentarily, Bloom replies "At the Grand Canal." Looking eastward along the River Liffey with John Rogerson's Quay on the far bank and the Alliance & Dublin Gasworks gasometer on Hanover Quay in the left distance. The gasworks and this stretch of the river appear in many other productions including 'Meet Simon Cherry', ‘Rooney’, 'Another Shore', 'Tim Driscoll's Donkey', ‘The Big Gamble’ and 'The Quare Fellow'.

Both sides of the River Liffey are unrecognisable from the 60s. The Matt Talbot Bridge to the left is just one of new bridges built since. The City Quay church steeple is dwarfed and barely visible against the new taller buildings. PC

The weather begins to change as the carriage moves off. Facing north from Victoria Bridge with the Grand Canal Dock filling the foreground and Hanover Quay beyond. A closer view of Hanover Quay can be seen in 'Term of Trial'.

This area has been completely transformed since 2000. Among the many outstanding new buildings constructed is the magnificent Grand Canal Theatre, renamed the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre in 2012, which continues to host a great many shows from London's West End.

Hugh "Blazes" Boylan (Joe Lynch) raises his trilby as the procession passes. Pat Cleary's brother Paul remembered that there was a Tedcastles in D'Olier Street, Dublin 2 . . . and this is the place. "The curtained building with the decorative frontage is currently a hostel and the old Tedcastles and the premises next to it are occupied by a bookshop."

It was too risky to step out from the pavement on an extremely busy street with a bus stop queue in close proximity, so Pat Cleary used a dashcam for this shot. The yellow on the lamp post is the reflection of the early morning sun on the paintwork of a stopped-in-traffic bus in the middle lane.

Bloom imagines his Wife with Blazes before the cortège crosses the river. Looking north on Butt Bridge, crossing the Liffey from Dublin 2 to Dublin 1.

Don't be deceived. Standing on the road at this busy junction was not possible but a lucky break in traffic light sequencing enabled a clear shot from the other side of the road. PC

The carriage's Passengers look upstream as the carriage pulls away. The view westward towards O'Connell Bridge with Burgh Quay on the left and Eden Quay to the right.

O'Connell Bridge is now slightly obscured by the new Rosie Hackett Bridge that carries the Green Luas tramline, taxis, cyclists and pedestrians across the Liffey. PC

Another momentary break in traffic enables Pat Cleary to take a clear shot.

It's as if the trees along the Finglas Road have stood up tall to applaud the spectacle on this side of the fence. PC

Apart from the gravestone on the extreme right, Pat Cleary (PC) found no change here over all the years.

Following the funeral, Dedalus hands over Garrett Deasy's letter inside the newspaper offices. 31 Westmoreland Street, Dublin 2.

As the Staff inside discuss moving on to Mooney's bar, Dedalus steps into the street. The Westmoreland Street address was home to the Irish Times between 1873 and 2005. The building's entrance can also be seen in 'The Mark'.

Advertising Hely's printing business, a line of Sandwich Men pause and look back to where Denis Breen (Jack Plant), the "S", is lagging behind. Facing the junction of Westmoreland Street, Grafton Street and College Green outside the Bank of Ireland.

The concrete lamp posts are long gone. This junction became so congested following the construction of the Luas Tram line that it is now restricted to public transport, taxis and cyclists. PC

Bloom writes in his book before Josie Breen approaches to say hello. Outside the Bank of Ireland, opposite Moore's Statue, on Westmoreland Street 2 with Trinity College on College Green in the background. The colonnade also appears in 'Quackser Fortune Has a Cousin in the Bronx'.

In the 1960's the concept of ATM machines embedded in bank walls dispensing cash would not even have been in science fiction films. PC

After catching up with Josie's news, the Cuckold continues on his way, turning into the museum when spotting Blazes Boylan across the road. Looking onto Kildare Street from the entrance of the National Museum in Dublin 2.

Leaving the museum, Bloom bumps into Stephen Dedalus and Buck Mulligan. The National Museum on Kildare Street.

Carrying armfuls of his Son's books, Simon Dedalus passes a bookmakers as he makes his way to the pawn shop next door.

Catching up with her Father, Dilly Goulding asks if he's got any money.

Leopold Bloom browses through a stall selling books prompting the Bookseller (Richie Stewart) to suggest good titles. Looking out from Merchant's Arch with the Ha'penny Bridge crossing the Liffey in the background.

A constant stream of mainly tourists passing through the archway in both directions left no opportunities for a clearer shot. PC

Having purchased a second-hand copy of "Sweets of Sin", Bloom heads across the river. Butt Bridge with the Liffey Viaduct to the top and the Custom House on Custom House Quay in the background.

An almost exact replica shot was seen in television's 'Foyle's War' episode 'The Eternity Ring' which was filmed in Dublin standing in for London. PC

Dedalus turns the pages of a volume at another stall before his sister Dilly arrives carrying Chardenal's French Primer that she bought for 4d. Facing south towards Temple Bar and Crown Alley from beneath Merchant's Arch, Dublin 2.

A brief break in the usual crowds that pass through the Arch .PC

Bloom looks through the window of Boylan's shop, recalling when things changed between Molly and himself. Pat Cleary identifies Dorset Street Lower 1 beside the junction with Synnott Place and, unseen to the right, Gardiner Street Upper.

Pat's comparison shows that the far side of the street has been redeveloped as a housing terrace and the brick building, possibly an electricity substation or pumping station, on Synnott Place is no longer there.

As he sits drinking in a bar, Bloom reminisces about happier times with Molly. To the top left stands the Baily Lighthouse, seen from the slopes of the Summit at Howth in County Dublin.

Descending further down the cliff to that ledge was not an option for Pat Cleary.

Rescued from the bar by Joe Hynes and Martin Cunningham when the conversation turns against him, Bloom shouts back towards the xenophobic Citizen. Outside the Irish House on Wood Quay in Dublin 8 with the Four Courts on Inns Quay in the right background.

It appears to be almost mandatory for film directors shooting in Dublin to include the Four Courts in their productions. Following the long refurbishment of the dome the scaffolding still remains around the stonework. PC

Citizen (Geoffrey Golden) turns to find ammunition from inside the bar as Bloom is driven away by Hynes and Cunningham. Facing the Irish House at the corner of Winetavern Street and Wood Quay. Long since demolished, the bar was also seen in ‘The Big Gamble’ and 'Another Shore' while Winetavern Street was seen in 'The Blue Max'.

Pat Cleary returned to the corner that's now bereft of a watering hole.

The sound of a Choir fills the Dublin air . . . The spire of St George's church on Hardwick Place, Dublin 1.

Pat Cleary tells us that construction of this former Church of Ireland began in 1802. "Since its de-consecration in 1991 it has been used as a theatre, nightclub and now converted to offices. The Spire extends to 200 feet."

. . . as Bloom walks past a church. St. Mary's Star of the Sea RC church on Sandymount Road, Dublin 4 located by Pat Cleary.

Foliage growth over almost 60 years now hides much of the church from view in Pat's comparison.

Leaning on a wall, Bloom watches Children gathered by their Mothers' who tell Gerty MacDowell that they're off to the fireworks. Looking north on Strand Road, Sandymount with numbers 175 and 173 to the extreme left.

Pat Cleary noticed that the lamp posts all remain in situ.

Frustrated after being teased by Gerty, Bloom returns to the city. The Ha'penny Bridge, officially the Liffey Bridge, crossing the River Liffey from Ormond Quay and Bachelors Walk to Wellington Quay. The bridge can also be seen in 'Another Shore', 'The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne', 'Rooney', '30 Is a a Dangerous Age, Cynthia', 'Flight of the Doves'.

The busy early tourist season meant a non-stop stream of pedestrians across this famed bridge. PC

Bloom enters the National Maternity Hospital intending to visit Mina Purefoy in the maternity ward . . . but is diverted into a party in the interns lounge attended by Buck Mulligan, Stephen Dedalus and Haines. The National Maternity Hospital on Holles Street 2.

The only changes that Pat Cleary found appear to be signs and a wall plaque.

Leaving the hospital, Bloom follows Haines and Mulligan who hurry after a very drunk Dedalus as he makes his way to the station. Pearse railway station on Westland Row, Dublin 2.

While Haines and Mulligan cross the footbridge after taking the key to the tower, Bloom follows Dedalus to his train. Pearse station had been renamed from Westland Row station in 1966.

The train departs with Dedalus and Bloom on board. The platforms at Dublin's Pearse station can also be seen in 'Johnny Nobody', 'Term of Trial' and ‘Angela’s Ashes’.

Darkness falls over the city as the train heads into the suburbs. Looking west along the River Liffey with O'Connell Bridge to the bottom.

At his destination, a door swings open and the unsteady Dedalus steps from the carriage.

Walking a short distance behind Dedalus, Bloom enters "Nighttown" where he passes a Prostitute (Pauline Melville) standing in a doorway.

After imagining Gerty MacDowell in the red light area, Bloom dreams that he's bumped into Josie Breen (Maureen Potter).

Wearing his "S", Mr. Breen walks past.

As Bloom continues past Women leaning out of their windows, two Gardai place their hands on his shoulders before asking for his name and address.

After his fantasy court appearance, Bloom follows Dedalus into Bella Cohen's brothel where, inside, he imagines himself as a striking worker.

Next, he's the Lord Mayor of Dublin. Within the grounds of the National Museum of Ireland on Kildare Street 2.

A Man speaks about Bloom, the world's greatest reformer. Looking across the River Liffey towards O'Connell Street and the O'Connell Monument from the roof of Ballast House at the corner of Aston Quay and Westmoreland Street.

A Gentleman makes comment. The 18th century Casino at Marino off Cherrymount Crescent, Dublin 3.

An Artist explains that Bloom has a classic face with the forehead of a thinker.

After Leopold Patrick Andrew David George Bloom is crowned, a new day dawns.

Children clap their hands for Poldy as flag is raised. The National Museum of Ireland on Kildare Street.

People from Bloom's past call up to him. To the left stands Edmund Burke's statue in the grounds of Trinity College Dublin on College Green 2. This looked like an easy one to Pat Cleary . . . until discovering he'd need to be a contortionist of Tom Thumb size to get the exact angle by squeezing through a narrow railings.

"I stand for the reform of municipal boroughs and a plain ten commandments. New world for old . . ." The grounds of the National Museum of Ireland in Dublin.

". . . Union of all. Jews, Muslims, Gentiles. Free money, free love and a free church in a free state." The National Museum of Ireland on Kildare Street.

Back in reality, Dedalus leaves the brothel and steps into the street where Cissy Caffrey (Biddy White Lennon) grabs him by the arm.

Rescuing Dedalus from an altercation with two English Soldiers, Bloom helps his away.

Walking through through the dark streets, the pair deliberate . . .

. . . on music, literature, Ireland, Paris, friendship, women, prostitution, diet and the Roman Catholic Church.

A Narrator asks "Did Bloom discover common factors of similarity between their respective like and unlike reactions to experience?"

"Both were sensitive to artistic impressions, musical in preference to plastic or pictorial."

The two professes their disbelief in many orthodox religions, national, social and ethical doctrines . . . before arriving outside Bloom's home at number 7 Eccles Street. Demolished in 1967, the three storey terraced house stood near the corner of Dorset Street, Dublin 7. The front door to the property was saved by artist John Ryan who kept it in his bar, The Bailey, before donating it to the James Joyce Centre.

After Dedalus leaves the house in the early hours, Bloom settles in bed "top to tail" next to Molly as she thinks about Blazes Boylan as a priest, leaving the church with her following confession. The northern porch of St. Bartholomew’s church facing Elgin Road in Dublin 4.

Unsurprisingly, Pat Cleary found that nothing has changed here in 60 years.

The "Priest" becomes familiar with Molly. St. Bartholomew’s church at the junction of Elgin Road and Clyde Road in Ballsbridge.

The church grounds are very well maintained today as Pat discovered.

As the affair between Blazes and Molly begins, Children skip outside the bedroom window at 7 Eccles Street. Eccles Street with the spire of St. George's church on Hardwick Place to the right. Other views of Eccles Street appear in 'The Mark'.

Recounting better times with Leopold, Molly's mind carries her to Gibraltar and a former lover, Lieutenant Gardner. The Rock of Gibraltar with La Línea de la Concepción in the left distance.

As she lies awake next to her husband's feet, Molly contemplates the differences between men and women. Facing north from O'Connell Street Bridge with the O'Connell Monument to the centre and O'Connell Street receding into the distance.

Pat Cleary (PC) explains "Notably missing from the capture is Nelson Pillar which had been blown up in March 1966. It's space was finally filled in 2002 with the Spire of Dublin which rises to just under 400 feet. O'Connell Street has a very long history of events including the commencement of the 1916 Easter Rising at the General Post Office, JFK's motorcade in June 1963, the Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade and parades involving returning heroes of sporting achievements.

This road now boasts a separated dual bicycle lane and, naturally after all this time, the trees have matured to obscure the view. The canal barge is moored. PC

Just to the right of shot there is a seat where a local recalled his idyllic childhood here along the banks of the Grand Canal. PC

Molly remembers Leopold coming home drunk late at night.

"I was in mourning. It's eleven years ago now. Yes, he'd be eleven."

Molly's mind turns to being the mistress of the handsome young Dedalus as a poet and him writing about her.

A Crowd gathers outside the registry office to see Molly and Dedalus appear as man and wife.

Needing to be loved, Molly's fantasy takes her along the River Liffey. "If the fellow you want isn't there . . ." Looking towards O'Donovan Rossa Bridge with the Four Courts on Inn's Quay to the right.

The previous bridge was swept away during a storm in 1802. Its replacement, originally the Richmond Bridge, was renamed O'Donovan Rossa Bridge in 1923.

". . . Sometimes, by the Lord God, I was thinking will I go around by the quays there some dark evening, where nobody'd know me, and pick up a sailor off the sea." Facing O'Connell Bridge.

Shooting from the since built Rosie Hackett Bridge was a better option than hiring a canoe. PC

Due to "heather restoration" work ongoing on this roped-off side of the Head, this was as high as Pat Cleary could get.
