Under Suspicion (1991)

In a flashback, Tony Aaron (Liam Neeson) approaches the house of a suspected criminal.

Two years later. Tony, now a private detective, gets out of his car at Brighton Station. In the background the bottom of Guildford Road is visible.

The area in front of the station has seen substantial remodelling. He wouldn't be able to park there now.

A prospective client (Kevin Moore) comes out of the station to meet him.

Driving to Tony's office, they pass along Madeira Drive, Brighton.

The two arrive at the office. This is the Hope Sufferance Wharf in St Marychurch Road, Rotherhithe, London SE16.

Residential now, with plenty of parked cars.

The office is in a seedy area.

Peeking through the security gates. Much more respectable now.

Tony has booked the client into a double room at the Radley Hotel. Dudley Hotel, Lansdowne Place, Hove, East Sussex. (SD)

The Dudley Hotel was renamed Lansdowne Hotel in 2004. In 2013 the hotel went into administration and was closed until 2019 when it was converted into apartments and the name was changed again to Dudley Mansions. (SD)

Another day, another client. As Tony drives Carlo Stasio (Michael Almaz) along Madeira Drive, he's approached by an angry Denny (Richard Graham), who's owed money for the car.

Madeira Terrace has been closed since 2012 as corrosion has made the arches unsafe. Restoration should finally have been getting under way in 2020.

Stasio, it turns out, was a famous and wealthy artist. Now he and Tony's wife have been murdered. Here we see Selina (Alphonsia Emmanuel), the client's widow, at his funeral . . . Brompton Cemetery, SW10 looking north. Other parts of the cemetery can also be seen in 'Eastern Promises', 'Melody', 'Goldeneye', 'Afraid of the Dark' and 'Johnny English'.

Almost deserted. SJ

Tony heads to Stasio's house. His route takes him along the Undercliff Walk between Brighton Marina and Saltdean.

He arrives at the gate of the large house . . .

Frank Vance (Kenneth Cranham), an old friend of Tony's and the investigating officer on the murder case, is also at the house.

As Frank and Tony return along the Undercliff Walk, they discuss the case.

The two arrive outside the offices of the Stasio family solicitor. Adelaide Crescent, Hove in East Sussex. Stewart, Paul and Michael were close by in 'Pop Pirates'.

Very little has changed here.

Frank rings the bell. Opposite view, looking towards the seafront.

Again, very little change -- but a new coat of paint.

Stasio's mistress Angeline (Laura San Giacomo), is living in the house. She comes out to find police searching her car. Portmeirion in Gwynedd, conceived by architect and designer Clough Williams-Ellis.

As the search proceeds, Frank questions Angeline about her movements on the night of the killing. Portmeirion has appeared in television's 'Danger Man' and 'The Prisoner'.

He questions Roscoe (Stephen Moore), the family solicitor, at his home.

He goes to interview Selina at her flat, and finds Tony ahead of him. This location seems to overlook the West Pier from the West. An earlier glimpse of the distinctive chimneys of the Mercure Hotel confirms that this is Embassy Court, on the corner of Western Street and Brunswick Terrace, Brighton. Later, back at the Radley Hotel, Frank and Tony are trying to figure out how the murderer left the scene without being noticed. They look for a fire escape.

"He went over the roof!". Tony climbs the ladder. In the background, left of shot, Brighton's Charles Street is visible.

This is Charles Street from ground level.

Frank follows, climbing onto a platform with a view of the Palace Pier.

Further away, the two distinctive gables at the top left are in Steine Street. The action here seems to be taking place on the roof of what is now Patterns Bar on Marine Parade, Brighton

Frank and Tony found Tony's gun. Tony presses Frank to allow him some time before he passes on the evidence.

The West Pier . . . derelict in 1991, but a disintegrating skeleton in 2020.

He arrives at a Regency terrace that looks rather run-down . . . the north end of Mornington Crescent NW1 identified by SJ which, as Tris points out, also appears in 'An Education'. 'Brighton Rock (2010)', 'Night, After Night, After Night' and 'The Gentle Gunman'.

. . . and parks outside. This doesn't quite look like Brighton; the large 'L' to the top right corner should be a clue... 25 Mornington Crescent, NW1 but the Mornington Place entrance: the L has me puzzled. (SJ) ... Mystery solved. The L is from HOTEL. Above the first floor window was another sign which read HOTEL SPLENDIDE. The signs were added for the 1988 film 'Just Ask for Diamond'. They were not removed after filming and HOTEL was eventually painted over. The other sign was left until it fell down. Part of that sign can be seen in 2010's 'Brighton Rock', capture 14. (SD)

Tony and Angeline arrive at the house that we saw in the first capture, still unsold and empty two years on.

Frank has collected Tony and they have returned to Adelaide Crescent to meet Roscoe, just as 1959 ends and 1960 begins.

Despite Frank's efforts, Tony has been arrested and is on trial for the murder. Frank seeks out Tony's earlier client as a witness for his defence. County Hall, London SE1.

Angeline leaves a travel agency. 20A Bedford Place, Brighton. I watched this scene being filmed and I remember the car, which drove past the travel agency, was actually pushed and just rolled past. (SD)

I returned to the location to find the shop front has gone and number 20 now has a front room. (SD)

Tony has been found guilty and sentenced to death by hanging. Inside this prison, he begs Frank to look for new evidence. The back of what was, at the time of filming, the decommissioned Bankside power station, later to house the Tate Modern. Similar views of Bankside appear in Patriot Games and in Richard III.

Not quite the same place but with alterations in the early 2010a and compromised views (see comparison 44) to the west, this shows the architecture which remains. SJ

Angeline, her bags packed, leaves the Stasio house to drive to the airport. Portmeirion in Snowdonia.

Frank has returned to the house to search for ... something, anything... and has found a crucial piece of evidence. With almost no time to spare, and unable to get through by phone, he races through the pre-dawn gloom to stop a hanging.

East of Rottingdean again. The installation of shingle beds under the cliffs to catch chalk falls means that the concreted area is narrower than in 1991.

Apart from the speed bumps and the absence of traffic lights, not much has changed here in 30 years.

The days when Corona was just a fizzy drink. A milk float is emerging from Quebec Street . . . on the wrong side of the road...

Modern tech has replaced the tobacconist.

Frank heads for an accident. Montreal Road again.

On foot now, he runs to the prison, where the hanging is imminent. Bankside power station again.

The view is greener now. SJ

This is the opposite view to the previous capture. A view into Canvey Street. The building on the right was demolished sometime between 2003 and 2005.
