Undesirable Neighbour, The (The Scales of Justice)

The case of Bosworth against Chester began in this new town, some thirty miles from London. Queen's Square in Crawley, Sussex with The Broadway in the background.

Queen's Square now includes The Pavilion which stands on the west side of the square. This was viewed from the first floor of Decathalon which gained me some height. (SD)

Revisiting the scene is Edgar Lustgarten who asks, a new town changes the surroundings in which people live, but does it change human nature? Looking towards Queensway from Queen's Square in Crawley.

The Pavilion was built in 2005, The bandstand was renovated in 2016 and relocated to the Memorial Gardens. Queen's Square was redeveloped and re-open in October 2017. (SD)

Christ Church is now Crawley United Reformed Church. In 2015 the sanctuary entrance was demolished and a chancel built in its place. The steps up to the pavement have been replaced by a ramp. (SD)

Miss Briggs tells the gossip that the young man comes from a very respectable family and works for an insurance company before Agnes replies that he's married a common, brazen little hussy. Worth Park Avenue, Pound Hill, with houses on the corner of Pearson Road in the background. (SD)

After the honeymoon, Mr. and Mrs. Bosworth move into their new home. Leighlands, Crawley in Sussex.

The neighbours were friendly, with one exception. 10 Leighlands in Crawley.

Anna walks to the shopping centre to buy provisions. The Martlets with buildings on Queensway in the left distance.

Peter Dominic was at 27 The Martlets. Numbers 5 to 31 were redeveloped in the early 1990's and the shop on the right is now number 21. (SD)

As she browses vegetables, Anna overhears Miss Chester tell Miss Ford (Margaret Flint) that the plumber stayed at the Bosworths a full hour and the milkman visited for twenty minutes.

The fruit and veg shop was at number 29 The Martlets. After redevelopment this is now the entrance to Longden and renumbered as 21. (SD)

Leaving the library, Mrs. Bosworth passes two Lads. Crawley Public Library at the corner of Northgate Avenue and Woodfield Road.

The library opened in the County Buildings in 1963. A new library opened in 2008 at Southgate Avenue. The former library building was demolished in May 2021. (SD)

As Anna passes by, a Woman turns to her Friend and remarks "She's asking for trouble the way she flaunts herself about." Facing the junction of Northgate Avenue and Woodfield Road.

On the left is Crawley Police Station which opened in the late 1990's. This replaced the police station which was housed in the County Buildings. The former police station building was demolished in July 2021. (SD)

More unfounded accusations about Anna are spread by Miss Chester to Mrs. Brooks (Margaret Stallard). The Broadway, Crawley, with numbers 34, Lightfoot and 36, Merrywear, seen in between them. (SD)

Number 34 is now a Turkish Barber's and number 36 is a Vape Shop. (SD)

As she brings in the milk, Agnes Chester looks up to see a car stop outside the Bosworths. Number 10 Leighlands in Pound Hill, Crawley.

A few days later, Anna caught a mid-morning train London. Colin Watts of the Blood and Custard website advises that the train is formed of Southern Railway 2 HAL unit no. 2604 which is pulling into the old Crawley station which stood at the Brighton Road end of Station Way in Crawley, Sussex.

A short distance away, Miss Chester watches Anna enter a sleazy looking photographic studio. When Dave W realised that the property on the left looks theatrical with, perhaps, its billboard blanked-off, he was guided to St Martin's Theatre, or 'St Mousetrap', and consequently 8 West Street, London WC2 to its right convincingly dressed for its filming role.
