Temple Place WC2 Circa 1949

A Rolls Royce draws up to the kerb outside the building where businessman Charles Heywood has offices . . . This is solved: click the date for details (SJ).

After my brief and erroneous consideration of Finsbury Square (where, coincidentally the original Electra House was based), Dave W. found the relocated Electra House (after its Moorgate site suffered bombing), also seen in 'The Narrowing Circle', on Temple Place WC2. Only the statues on the column plinths have been retained in the rebuilding which now houses BAT. SJ

Electra House, on Temple Place WC2 Circa 1949

The Chauffeur opens the door of the car for Charles Heywood (Valentine Dyall) who makes his way the office where he meets Stacy, asking him to find a trusted man to kill someone. Electra House, on Temple Place WC2 as identified by Dave, see also the previous capture. (RL)

The entrance now to Globe House, formerly Electra House. SJ

Looking north from Ridgmount Street WC1 across Chenies Street to the mansion block of Ridgmount Gardens. Circa 1949

With only six months to live due to a medical condition, Charles hires Sammy Parsons to kill him order to frame his former business partner Richard Kemp before explaining why in flashback. Dave W clearly has a better print of the film on his DVD as he identifies this as Ridgmount Street, London WC1 looking across Chenies Street to the mansion block of Ridgmount Gardens. (RL)

Looking north. SJ

Looking north from Ridgmount Street WC1 across Chenies Street to the mansion block of Ridgmount Gardens Circa 1949

Needing somewhere to work from, the almost penniless Charles crosses the road towards a building on which a notice advertises accommodation. Ridgmount Street, London WC1 looking across Chenies Street to the mansion block of Ridgmount Gardens panning left from the previous capture says Dave. (RL)

Also panning left. SJ

what is now 19-21 Ridgmount Street, London WC1 circa 1949

Charles enters the building to make enquiries. Now 19-21 Ridgmount Street, Dave is pleased that, delightfully, the vehicle entrance and the apexed doorway are still there to support his identification. (RL)

The vehicle entrance and a big green bin. SJ

What is now 19-21 Ridgmount Street, London WC1 Circa 1949

Charles settles into his office before his former cell mate Stacy (Sam Kydd) arrives to discuss revenge against Richard Kemp. A clearer view of 19-21 Ridgmount Street as identified by Dave. (RL)

A very smart-looking doorway. SJ

The plan, worked out in prison, was to see the total destruction of Kemp and all he possessed. Fortunately, with no 'destruction' but a few cosmetic changes and renumbering Dave W finds the action taking place at 22A/22 (previously 4 and 5) Blenheim Terrace, London NW8. Blenheim Terrace also appears in 'Bedazzled'

To prove that he was in the correct place Paul Lincoln captured the address revealing a number of changes. (RL)

Whilst breakdowns are arranged in Kemp's factories, his lorries are sabotaged and anonymous letters sent, a Courier is attacked in the street by two Thugs. Following continuity Dave W finds Blenheim Passage, NW8, also seen in 'Assignment Redhead'. (RL)

Fortunately for Paul there was no such activity whilst he was there. (RL)

A Man flees through narrow streets as further action is taken against Kemp's business. We remain in Blenheim Passage, NW8 says Dave, looking towards Blenheim Terrace. (RL)

A more colourful Belheim Passage these days captured by Paul but unfortunately the cobbles appear to have gone. (RL)

As he continues to run, the camera picks up the Man from a reverse point of view. A reverse POV says Dave looking towards Carlton Hill and No 54 if we move on a few frames. (RL)

One is left to wonder whether Paul similarly ran off or made a more leasurely exit. (RL)

Back in the present, Charles leaves his office with Stacy to find Parsons after receiving news from his Doctor there is a good possibility of being cured of his condition. Electra House, WC2, as identified by Dave, see also captures 1 and 2. (RL)

All change as Electra House becomes Globe House. SJ

Unable to find Parsons in his usual haunts, Charles and Stacy ask Joe Turner (Bob Connor) if they have seen the assassin. Jules Ballantyne comes up with compelling evidence that this is Queen's Gate Mews off Queen's Gate Terrace, London SW7, the Queen's Arms is off camera to the right. Needless to say the garage is no longer there. (RL)

Looking souht-west, the quiet corner now but somewhat deceptive as the Queen's Arms was doing a roaring trade behind my right shoulder. SJ

Cass (Russell Westwood) checks out the shady ports of call where Sammy Parsons might be found. Westminster Bridge Road SE1 with the Red Lion public house at the corner of Lower Marsh in the left background.

A storey has been added and there has been some infill. The Red Lion is now called The Walrus. SJ

Along the river, Cass continues his search. Victoria Embankment in WC2 with Waterloo Bridge crossing the River Thames in the background.

No changes here. SJ

At last obtaining an address, Charles and Stacy head to visit Parsons but find that he has moved on. Dave's DVD clearly does provide a sharper imagery because he tells us that they knock on the door of No 66 Barclays Street, Somers Town, London NW1. It is interesting to note that the street can be seen in London Picture Archive 106428. (RL)

Barclays Street has disappeared in favour of the Somers Town Community Sports Centre. The southern end would have met Aldenham Street somewhere behind the pink wall. To the right lies Charrington Street, also running north-west, which still survives with architecture similar to Barclays Street. SJ

With an uneasy mind, Charles goes into hospital for his life saving operation. The Middlesex Hospital on Mortimer Street W1 which closed in 2005 to be demolished three years later.

The replacement is now established as Fitzroy Place, after an initial thought of NoHo Square was dropped. The site fills the whole block between Nassau Street and Cleveland Street. Also seen in Eastern Promises which just beat the wrecking ball. SJ

In fear of certain death at the hand of Parsons, Charles returns to his old office to hide where Linda arrives by taxi to find him. We are back at 19-21 Ridgmount Street as idenfied by Dave in earlier captures. (RL)

Altogether more chromatic. SJ

Hearing a gunshot from inside the building, Linda Farrell (Anne Firth) alerts a Sergeant (Roland Caswell) and a Policeman (Michael Bird). This view south, stretching down to Store Street from outside 19-21 Ridgmount Street, Dave highlights, reveals a WWII bombsite. (RL)

Nearly the same time of day. SJ
