Vengeance of Fu Manchu, The

The production opens with the wind blowing across a bleak landscape in the story's Chinese province of Kwang Su. Referring to the 2016 blog Hong Kong and Macau Film Stuff by Phil, Flip Jansen learnt that these opening scenes were filmed around Tai Mon Shan, Hong Kong's largest peak.

Driven from Scotland Yard, Nayland Smith nears home. Rather than London, the film was shot in Ireland and this is Earlsfort Terrace, Dublin 2 identified by Alan Bourke.

Pat Cleary found foliage and cars parked inside the boundary walls of the National Concert Hall plus a very large Camper van standing outside prevented an exact angle so he settled on a general view from the pavement instead. The far side of Earlsfort Terrace is unrecognisable from its 1967 days.

The Driver pulls over outside the Assistant Commissioner's house. Alan Bourke recognised Earlsfort Terrace to the south of St. Stephen's Green adding that this view is from the front of the National Concert Hall looking across the street at Alexandra College. There are now office buildings and an hotel where the college once stood.

Standing on tippy-toes with camera held high, Pat Cleary found it was possible to take this shot over a bush. "Ye olde" lampposts on the street remain in situ.

Getting out of the car, Denis Nayland-Smith (Douglas Wilmer) enters to be told by his housekeeper Jasmin Fu Shen that Dr. Petrie is waiting for him. Facing south on Earlsfort Terrace in Dublin with the National Concert Hall on the right, located by Alan Bourke,

Pat Cleary explains that the National Concert Hall evolved in 1981 from the previous occupier, University College Dublin, its auditorium located in the space known as the "Great Hall" where both university and non-university exams took place. "When attending concerts here I'm reminded that I experienced the latter in the early 1960s."

Nayland-Smith travels to Paris to meet with Inspector Javal who is proposing to set up an international organisation of police chiefs called Interpol. A panoramic view of Paris with the Eiffel Tower in the distance.

On board a trans-Atlantic ship, US criminal Rudolph Moss travels from San Fransisco to an unknown destination.

Two hundred miles from Fu Manchu's base lies the village of Pan Soo.

In the village, a Family approaches the practice of Dr. Lieberson before Fu Manchu's Army attack, kidnapping the missionary and his daughter Maria.

After the fledgling Interpol hears news that Moss has boarded the SS Orient Star sailing from Japan to Shanghai, Nayland-Smith travels to Ireland for a holiday. Church Hill as seen from The Square in Enniskerry, County Wicklow.

Pat Cleary had time on his hands for a return to Enniskerry and adds "The village was taken over by Disney in Summer 2021 for 'Disenchanted'."

A notice discovered in the porch by Pat Cleary proclaimed that this legendary hostelry is currently closed .

Pat Cleary found cars parked everywhere. "Compared with 1967 the village is always choc-a-bloc with cars and vans."

Fu Manchu's Minion watches the two men drive away. The Square in Enniskerry. The County Wicklow town can also be seen in 'Country Dance', 'Johnny Nobody', ?Flight of the Doves?, ?P.S. I Love You?, 'I See a Dark Stranger' and ?Leap Year?.

It was just possible for Pat Cleary to squeeze in between cars for this shot.

As the pair motor through the countryside, Nayland-Smith's car runs out of fuel.

Taking a lift offered by a passing Stranger, Dr. Petrie is taken to find petrol. Along the L1011 road between Glencree and Enniskerry in County Wicklow located by Pat Cleary who adds "Knockree Hill on this side of the valley is just visible over the cottage roof. It is difficult to pinpoint the exact spot where these buildings once stood but, bearing in mind the distances between the tops of the mountains, I think it can be narrowed down to a half mile stretch about two miles from Glencree."

57 years later, Pat explains that normal growth and State Forestry plantations have taken over much of this road thus reducing the available views from ground level. This is the only spot in this area where all of the background mountains could be at least partially seen.

While Nayland-Smith is being kidnapped and replaced by a doppelgänger surgically crafted by Dr. Lieberson at Fu Manchu's bidding, the Stranger stops outside a remote garage. As the camera pans with the car, Pat Cleary points out Maulin on the other side of the valley as the peak pokes its tall head into view.

Dr. Petrie (Howard Marion-Crawford) waits as the Garage Attendant fills his can. It is difficult to pinpoint the exact spot where these buildings once stood but and this is unlikely to have been a real petrol garage but even in this remote part of Wicklow in 1967 nothing would surprise Pat Cleary.

Nothing of the buildings remain in Pat's modern view.

Bound, gagged and restrained in a crate, Nayland-Smith is loaded onto a freighter bound for the Orient.

Accompanied by Lin Tang, Rudolph Moss (Horst Frank) arrives at Fu Manchu's home where surgeon Dr. Lieberson (Wolfgang Kieling) and Maria (Suzanne Roquette) are being held prisoner. The Movietown temple set at Clearwater Bay, Hong Kong.

In London, Dr. Petrie tells Mark Weston of the FBI that Nayland-Smith had been taken ill in Ireland and now seems to have a different personality. Newspapers carry grim headlines after the replicated Nayland-Smith murders Jasmin.

Following Nayland-Smith's sentencing, Dr. Petrie arrives at the prison where the counterfeit awaits his fate. The gateway to Beggars Bush Barracks on Haddington Road, Dublin 4.

Pat Cleary fund that the gates are always open at this former barracks which now hosts Government Departments with many other buildings tastefully converted into private residential apartments.

While Fu Manchu watches the sand in an hourglass some ten thousand miles away, his creation is taken from his cell. Beggars Bush Barracks in Dublin.

Accompanied by Prison Officers, Nayland-Smith walks silently to his execution. The former British Army barracks was the first barracks to be handed over to the Irish Republican Army in January 1922 before being decommissioned in 1929.

Prayers are uttered as the column makes its way through the prison. The main gates of Beggars Bush Barracks also feature in 'The Quare Fellow'.

The false Nayland-Smith approaches the gallows to be hanged at the same moment the last grain of sand falls . . . . Fu Manchu's vengeance is complete. Beggars Bush Barracks on Haddington Road, Dublin 4.

This was the best angle Pat Cleary could get without encroaching onto private property. The building straight ahead was formerly the garrison chapel and is now the National Print Museum.
