Additional Information:
Screen captures by Phil Wilkinson
Also known as ‘The Vanquished‘ (English Title)
According to several sources including here, allegedly, even during filming of the sequence, which was being shot under the working title ‘Sans Amour’, based on the court case of ‘le gang des J3’ at Melun in 1951, a lawsuit was filed to compel the French government to confiscate the existing footage. The plaintiff turned out to be the father of a female minor, who had been convicted of aiding and abetting the murder of a 16-year-old classmate. Director Antonioni apparently responded by anonymising also the filming locations, referring to them only as fictional places (e.g. Saint-Claude or Château Virènes) in the dialogues.

If you have any information regarding this production, the locations or, even better, some comparison shots please contact us. Images submitted must be in Landscape orientation, as would be seen on the cinema screen, not Portrait.
We are aware that there are films on the site that were added when the criteria for the inclusion of locations was very different from today and, as a result, there may be scenes missing from some productions. Please do not forward additional screen captures to us but bring the detail to our attention, for we do, and are, 're-addressing' these older entries as time allows.

A montage of stock footage accompanies the opening narration "It doesn't matter if the stories we're about to tell you are true. Consider them invented because you're seeing them on the screen. Consider them true because they happen every day. Because every day they fill the news."

"These stories are the exploits of the "burnt-out generation". The generation which were children during the war and when they opened their eyes, they saw only one thing in the world: The general mobilization of violence. The show was so impressive, so intrusive that it seemed to hide everything. Even kindness, generosity, sacrifice. "

"But even so they flourished during those years as in others. Violence appeared triumphant. It went at a happy and sporty pace. It went as far as to feign a sort of juvenile innocence. Its law was to scorn every law. Its social characteristic was contempt for any society in the triumph of the audacious individual, cynical, devoid of remorse." Steve Randall identifies the background building as Reading Town Hall in Town Hall Square at the corner of Blagrave Street and The Forbury in Reading, Berkshire. This and the following capture originated in a Pathé news segment from 1953 entitled "Glamour at No. 10" that featured Reading University Rag Week. When male students invited three French girls to join the parade, the female students took their protest to London. (SR)

"When the burnt-out generation appeared in the news with a series of crimes, it was apparent that it wasn't delinquency which arises from poverty and social differences. The new heroes in the papers were youngsters from well off families, unaware that one of their members could do such evil acts." With the help of the equestrian statue faintly visible beyond the front of the bus heading away to the left, Dave W was surprised to discover that this is Whitehall SW1. The elevation to the right of the banner shows the Office of the Secretary of State For Wales. (RL)

Following breakfast, Georges (Henri Poirier) and André (Jacques Sempey) prepare to go out on a day that they have decided to kill their school friend Pierre. Manuel Gurtner draws or attention to the far distance between the actors where the striking building called La Rotonde de la Villette can be made out. The monument, designed by architect Claude-Nicolas Ledoux, was constructed between 1784 and 1788 and is still located on the then called Place de Stalingrad in the 19th arrondissement. The flat where filming took place is on the first floor above the restaurant Le Cadran Bleu, located at 2 Avenue Jean Jaurès, just on the corner with Boulevard de la Villette. Through the window, the elevated Métro section between Barbès - Rochechouart station and Jaurès station can be seen.

Georges looks out from a cafe at Saint-Claude where he, Paul, Simone, Pauline and André have arranged to meet Pierre. Manuel Gurtner (MG) explains that this is the street cafe at the Terminus Château Hotel with the entrance to Château de Vincennes Métro station on the left.

After Pierre arrives, George, André and Simone run towards the bus that their friends have boarded. Avenue de Nogent in the 12th arrondissement with Château de Vincennes bus terminus in the background, located by Manuel Gurtner.
- Capture 12
- 'Now' required

The bus approaches a level crossing where the teenagers have to change to continue their journey to Château Virènes. Manuel Gurtner's unceasing research found that the Renault TN6 type bus of the then RATP line 120 from Château de Vincennes to Noisy-le-Grand is approaching Rue de Paris level crossing in a rural area within Seine-et-Marne department to the east of Noisy-le-Grand. The area in what later became part of the Noisiel municipality is now completely built up.
- Capture 13
- 'Now' required

Alighting from the bus, George, Pauline (Annie Noël) and André run ahead and signal for an approaching train to stop. Manuel Gurtner discovered that the mysterious looking carriage is the Voiture-Salon of the Menier family with one of the three 0-6-0 tank locos, built by Graffenstaden at Belfort and by La Meuse at Liège, propelling. The standard-gauge private branch between Émerainville station and Noisiel was opened in 1883 and served the famous Menier chocolate factory on the banks of the river Marne until 1959.

When the train steams past without stopping, the friends climb through a hedge onto an airstrip where a glider comes in to land. The aérodrome de Lognes at Lognes found by Manuel Gurtner (MG). Open to the public air traffic since 1947, the airfield is located 28 km east of Paris in the Seine-et-Marne department.

Making their way across the airstrip and through a wood, the group approach the ruined château.
- Capture 16
- 'Now' required

Pierre Vernis (Jean-Pierre Mocky) leads André into the building. It is unclear whether it is really a ruined castle. The director apparently borrowed the name 'Château Virènes' from the novel 'L'héritier des ducs de Sailles' by Delly, a pseudonym for the brothers Jeanne-Marie Petitjean de La Rosière (1875-1947) and Frédéric Petitjean de La Rosière (1876-1949). (MG)

As they look around the derelict building, André takes a pistol from his pocket and shoots Pierre.

George, Pauline, André and Simone flee from the scene. The edge of the Bois de Lognes advises Manuel Gurtner, where a connecting track branches off from the seven kilometre long private line between Émerainville station and Noisiel to serve the Ferme du Buisson, which was also run by the Menier family.
- Capture 19
- 'Now' required

After the Gamekeeper discovers the wounded boy at the château, André is taken to the police station by his Father (Albert Michel). Manuel Gurtner reasons that this is obviously not the pavement in front of number 2 Avenue Jean Jaurès. However, it could be the area along Boulevard de la Villette next to Jaurès metro station.

When Georges follows, his Father tells him to return home before he and André walk from view. This may be Boulevard de la Villette, but Manuel Gurtner's research is ongoing.

ITALIA: The wail of sirens fills the air as headlights approach. The motorcade has just passed the archway at Via Dora, just reaching Piazza Mincio as the heart of Quartiere Coppedè, a unique area of Rome with its own distinct architectural style. The camera angle in the middle of the square, but out of view by Fontana delle Rane, was obviously chosen deliberately to conceal the filming location as already mentioned in the header. By the way, the fountain can be seen in 'If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium'. MG

After panning with a short convoy of fire appliances, the camera settles on a gateway. Palazzo del Ragno is located on the corner to Via Brenta. On the river bank nearby, a gang of Men watch a small motor boat approach. In the background, Ponte Guglielmo Marconi crosses the River Tevere, then still a construction site. The bridge was started in 1937 under Mussolini, but its construction was interrupted due to the war, resumed only in 1953. The official inauguration took place on 26 February 1955. MG

- 'Now' required

When Customs Officials appear while cases of cigarettes are being loaded into a truck, Claudio Valmauro (Franco Interlenghi) flees from the scene. Manuel Gurtner (MG) discovered that Gerber girder technology was used in the construction of the 235-meter-long Ponte Guglielmo Marconi, still the longest bridge in Rome.
- Capture 26

Gunfire rings out in the background as Claudio runs over a bridge under construction. The enormous width of Ponte Guglielmo Marconi is apparent, with four lanes of traffic and pedestrian walkways on both sides, which now connects, what was then, the up-and-coming districts of Ostiense and Portuense. When he arrives, Claudio takes Marina outside as Policemen enter the building's lobby and get into the elevator. The apartment block is located in the exclusive Quartiere Pinciano on a hill of the Monti Parioli. In the distance, the dome of St. Peter's Basilica can be recognised. MG

Descending from the apartment by the stairs, Marina and Claudio get into her car and leave the building.
- Capture 38
- 'Now' required

After Claudio admits to Marina that he's killed a Man, Marina drives on in disbelief. Manuel Gurtner explains that this is Via Cristoforo Colombo, formerly Via Imperiale, with Piazza dei Navigatori in the background, which is located on the border between the Ostiense and Ardeatino districts. The open space was planned as a trapezoid, on the site of a bend in Via Imperiale, with two monumental, symmetrical buildings for intensive housing, designed by architect Cesare Pascoletti. Construction began in 1942 on the left wing, which was the only one to be completed, visible to the left.
