Storyline:
Adapted from the novella by Nicolai Gogol. A seminary student beats an old crone to near death after she transforms into a beautiful young woman and requests he be brought to her village. On arrival, he finds out she has died, her deathbed request: that he recite prayers for her over a three night vigil – nights that will test his spiritual depth to the extreme.

Student Khoma (Leonid Kuravlyov) beats an old crone (Nikolay Kutuzov) and on witnessing her subsequent transformation into the beautiful Pannochka (Natalya Varley) he flees the scene. On arrival, Pannochka has already died. She requested a three-night prayer vigil be performed by Khoma. Her body is moved to the church. Assumption of the Virgin Church, Horokholyn Lis, Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, Ukraine. The original wooden church burned to the ground in 2006, and has been replaced by a (brick!) modern equivalent.
