What Every Woman Wants (1954)

Before the titles begin, signs of unrest appear in an industrial landscape.

In the left distance stands the CWS Flour Mill on South Quay of the Royal Victoria Dock in Silvertown and this may be in the vicinity of Charles Street E16.

Taking this comparison, Keith Prested explains that nothing remains of Tidal Basin station. Only the route of the tracks survives which is now used by the Docklands Light Railway. The area has changed completely over the years and is now dominated by Gateway Tower. The crane like structures in the background are support towers for the London Cable Car.

The camera finds the engineering works where a whistle sounds to signal the end of the working day.

Inside the works, Bill Brown (Dominic Roche) asks if his son-in-law Mark Hadley (Patric Doonan) will work overtime to complete a rush order while Frank (Edwin Richfield) waits to hear his answer.

At Whiteley's, Mark's wife Jane looks forward to going to a dance that evening as she prepares to leave work. The Whiteley Ltd. department store at the corner of Porchester Gardens and Queensway in Bayswater W2. Other views of the store appear in 'Park Plaza 605', 'Passport to Shame', 'Connecting Rooms' and 'Two Left Feet'.

The former department store taken by Keith Prested (KP), which is undergoing conversion to a mixed-use development comprising 139 luxury apartments along with restaurants, cafés, a cinema and state-of-the-art gym.

No tramway now, but there is a bus on North Woolwich Road and the DLR of course. KP

Bill crosses the road towards the home he shares with his father Tom, wife Sarah, son Herbert and daughter Jane along with her husband. Bradfield Road in E16 with the Venesta aluminium works to the right.

Keith Prested (KP) found that some development has been, and still is, under way.

That evening, Jane goes to the cinema on her own while Mark speaks about low pay and victimisation at his union meeting.

The factory whistle starts another day.

After Jim Barnes (William Sylvester) arrives to stay with the family, he waits to take Jane to lunch. Facing north outside Whiteleys on Queensway W2.

As the threat of a strike looms, newspapers carry headlines about the deteriorating situation in the workplace.

One evening Mr. and Mrs, Hadley leave their Bible Meeting.

Across the road, the pair see Jane and Jim getting out of a taxi together. The Orchard Hotel on Ickenham Road in Ruislip, Middlesex. This footage is taken from 'Mandy' and the location also makes an appearance during 'Lolita'..

Factories and workshops lie silent as the strike begins.

Mark moves out of the Brown's house and back in with his parents. Looking along Lord Street towards Newland Street E16 with the cranes of King George V Dock in the distance.

Keith Prested found a lot more cars in in front of the houses on the left hand side which have survived. Beyond the flyover at the end of the road is London City Airport.

The shot moves to the window where Mark and Frank read reports about the strike. These are still extant properties on Lord Street.

Mark helps Bill to escape the angry mob after he speaks out against the strike.
