Wild and the Willing, The

The film opens with a panning shot and a thank you to the City of Lincoln. A view from the Castle walls over the City with the Cathedral prominent.

I was too much in haste to pay the fee for the castle walls so took this from lower down. SJ

The scene changes to the campus of Kilminster University. The Observatory Tower of Lincoln Castle. The highest turret was built out of wood and added for the film.

As the titles continue, Harry Brown (Ian McShane) walks through Kilminster University campus. Inside the grounds of Lincoln Castle with the East Gate leading to Castle Hill in the background.

A warm late spring day. SJ

Harry's room mate Phil Corbett (John Hurt) watches his fellow students pass by. Lincoln Castle with the Georgian Gaol coming into view on the right.

Nearly the same time of day. SJ

Andrew Gilby (Jeremy Brett) talks with Virginia Chown (Virginia Maskell), the Professor's wife that he is romantically involved with. More of the Debtors Prison serves as the backdrop.

A little further west than the previous. SJ

When Virginia's husband turns up, Gilby turns from the car and follows Edgar Tibbs (Charles Kay). Facing East Gate from within Lincoln Castle's grounds.

The tree to the left has gone. SJ

The unassuming Phil runs as a linesman during a rugby match in which his friends are players.

Sarah Phillips (Katherine Woodville) and Josie Stevens (Samantha Eggar) wait for the boys to get changed after the match.

Another day begins as students enter the main University building. This is looking out from the entrance to Lincoln Crown Court located within the Castle grounds.

John Agincourt (David Sumner) and Harry arrive at Professor Chown's house for tuition. Lincoln Cathedral towers in the background as seen from the corner of Castle Hill and Drury Lane.

Back in September 2022, I should be just a tad further to the right but the crowds didn't make it easy so here's an improvement. SJ

Dai Hawkins (Johnny Briggs), Arthur (John Standing), Phil and Reggie (Johnny Sekka) leave the Labour in Vain and set out on a pub crawl. Looking north on Steep Hill with Harding House to the right.

The friends sing and dance their way downhill. Steep Hill with Christ's Hospital Terrace in the right distance.

The friends vault railings on their way into town as John and Harry's tuition draws to an end. Steep Hill with the junction of The Strait and Danes Terrace at the foot.

Mrs. Chown watches Harry through the window as he heaves the house. Looking out onto Drury Lane with Steep Hill on the extreme right.

It was the Steampunk bank holiday weekend, hence the crowds and dressing-up. SJ

After Harry reminds her that they're meeting later, Josie leaves happy. To the left is the colonnade of Lincoln Crown Court.

Josie creeps back into the dormitory after a late evening with Harry.

After Harry begins to see Virginia Chown, Josie is disappointed to see him buying flowers. Cornhill facing Sincil Street with the Corn Market rising on the left.

Harry hails an approaching bus. High Street at the corner with Cornhill.

Andrew Kelly provides us with more up to date shots of the City noting that 'Weaver to Wearer" has given way to a new building housing 'Next'. (RL)

The bus carries Harry away to see Virginia. High Street with Lincoln War Memorial as well as St. Benedict's Square and Church visible to the right.

Presumably, pedestrianisation helped Andrew capture the scene without buses spoiling the view. (RL)

As Harry and Virginia spend the evening together, Professor George Chown (Paul Rogers) returns to Kilminster. This looks very much like the entrance to Slough station on, what was, Station Approach in Slough, Berkshire.

Harry and Phil make their way along the walls of the University with a makeshift Rag Week flag. The walls of Lincoln Castle.

Whilst in Lincoln, Phil Richards kindly 'took time out' to capture this shot for us of the curtain wall of Lincoln Castle; the circular wall to the right is the separate prison that is totally contained within the castle grounds. (RL)

As they leave the Coroner's Office, Mr. and Mrs. Corbett (John Barrie and Megs Jenkins) grab Harry's attention.

Phil also ventured to just outside the Lincoln Guild Hall for this shot. He says that he honestly tried to keep the shop window out of shot but by his own admission.... failed miserably. As it happens H Samuel is now Anne Summers. At least you were not arrested Phil. (RL)

Harry makes his excuses and leaves after the Corbetts show their appreciation for him befriending their son.

I think we're looking from the Old Curiosity Shop at the corner of The Strait looking down High Street. SJ

The procession continues through Kilminster. The Strait at the junction with Danes Terrace looking up Steep Hill with the Jews House to the left and the Cathedral top right centre.

The shot pans to give a reverse point of view on High Street at the High Bridge over the River Witham.

Battling through the onlookers, Harry turns off the main road. Facing High Street from St. Benedict's Square.

Andrew reveals yet more changes to the shopping habits of the City. (RL)

Harry escapes the procession and the crowds and heads back to the University.

Andrew provides this shot of St Benedict's Square looking towards Brayford, remarking that all buildings in the original have now gone, but the low wall remains on the right as can be seen. (RL)

After being called in front of the Vice Chancellor, Harry tells his friends that he has been expelled, forfeiting a scholarship and an academic career. Looking out onto the junction of Temple Street and Cathedral Street from now demolished and replaced buildings of Lincoln Technical College. On the right is the Cathedral Building which still stands.

And the Cathedral Building is well advertised. SJ

Josie wanders through the city. North Witham Bank with High Bridge taking High Street over the River Witham in the right distance.

Andrew provides this shot of the fantastically, locally named, 'Glory Hole' - Source of much innuendo!! Hardly changed. (RL)

The camera follows the young student. Brayford Head alongside the River Witham with the since replaced Brayford swing bridge on the extreme right.

Harry arrives at the bus station where Josie is waiting. Inside St. Mark's bus station on St. Mark Street which was closed and demolished in 1995.

After realising that she doesn't mean that much to Harry, Josie walks from the bus station. Looking out onto St. Mark Street from Lincoln's St. Mark's bus station, now the site of the St. Mark's Shopping Centre. The buildings seen through the doorway still stand on the other side of Holmes Bridge.

Taken from a similar position Andrew provides proof that some of the old does indeed remain. (RL)

The bus departs with Harry on board. The bus is turning from Waterside North onto Magpie Square at the southern end of Broadgate.

As Harry takes a last glance at the tower where Phil lost his life, the bus turns to head out of town. Broadgate in Lincoln, Lincolnshire with St. Swithin's Church to the left and the Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the distance.

A rather useful elevated pedestrian bridge over Broadgate provides a good vista. New building has obscured St Swithin's somewhat. SJ
