World War Z

The home of former United Nations investigator Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt), his wife Karin (Mireille Enos) and their daughters Rachel (Abigail Hargrove) and Constance (Sterling Jerins). 322 Adams Street, Decatur, Georgia, USA.

John F Kennedy Boulevard, Philadelphia PA. The traffic is gridlocked. Suddenly, an explosion up ahead, people start running. Facing west on Cochrane Street, Glasgow, at the junction with John Street. Buildings on John F Kennedy Boulevard have been added to the background.

Andy McArthur (AMcA) visited a zombie-free Glasgow to follow the escape route of Gerry and his family. Andy begins with the view west along Cochrane Street at the junction of John Street which runs north and southwards. On the left with the window grills is the Italian Centre, a high class group of retail units. On the right is the south side of Glasgow City Chambers building, home to the Glasgow City Council.

Left of shot is the rear of the Glasgow City Chambers. The modern building on the right is the Wheatley House, offices of HM Revenue and Customs and Glasgow Housing Association. Named after John Wheatley a prominent politician during the Red Clyde Side Era of the 1920’s. Very well respected man also named after him the Wheatley Housing Group (Scotland's largest registered social landlord) along with the John Wheatley College now known as Glasgow Kelvin College. An out of control garbage truck ploughs a path through the stationary vehicles. The corner of George Square and Cochrane Street.

Looking east along Cochrane Street. In the distance on the right is the Wheately House and in the near right the Italian Centre. The Italian Centre is decorated with statues to enhance the appearance and add to the glamour. Now capture achieved by boarding a double decker bus, hence the reflection of the window glass. Among all the vehicles, traffic light swaps and American street furniture to make the area appear to be in Philadelphia the Piper Bar in the centre is a genuine bar. (AMcA)

North Frederick Street leading to Cathedral Street is one of several steep inclines in the city centre. Glasgow is built on a series of Drumlins, hard rock not worn down during the ice age. The expression that Glasgow is built on a basket of eggs is sometimes used to refer to these drumlins. (AMcA)

Zombies attack! George Square facing George Street.

The now capture includes some of the thirteen statues to famous royalty, soldiers and poets. George Square for a period of time was paved with red coloured tarmac. This earned it the nickname Red Square. (AMcA)

People run in all directions as zombies, with their infectious bite, create more zombies. George Square facing West George Street.

In the now capture there are four buildings of significance. Left of shot is The City Chambers. To its right is the Merchants House of Glasgow, a social enterprise charity with a 400-year-old history. Here the generous merchants of Glasgow would meet and distribute monetary gifts to those in need. Centre of shot is St George’s Tron Church in Buchanan Street. To the right is the former North British station Hotel, also known as North Hanover Street, Queens Hotel and Copthorne Hotel. In the year 2000 the hotel was renamed the Millennium Hotel. (AMcA)

The National Guard attempts to create a blockade against the zombies. Facing west on George Street, by the junction with John Street. The building on the right has had the facade of 1-7 George Square added to it, and buildings on Arch Street, Philadelphia have been added to the background.

The address 1-7 George Square is the former Head Post Office for the City of Glasgow. John Street crosses George Street and begins to ascend in a steep incline as described in capture 6. John Street is also famous for the Registry Office for the city recording birth, deaths and marriages. A newer marriage suite with Victorian era character is available in Park Circus Glasgow but John Street office very well know to the citizens of Glasgow. (AMcA)

Gerry and his family head out of Philadelphia in a requisitioned RV. George Street facing east. The Benjamin Franklin Bridge from Philadelphia has been added to Glasgow.

On the left of the now capture is the Royal College Building. Centre of the capture is the NCP Car Park George Street and the Strathclyde University Livingston Tower, Richmond Street Glasgow. These three buildings can be seen in Cloud Atlas captures 21, 22 and 23. (AMcA)

Gerry and his family head north on Interstate 95. Wholeflats Road, Grangemouth, Scotland, with the Grangemouth oil refinery on the right.

Not much difference between screen capture and now capture. Grangemouth is home to the only crude oil refinery in Scotland. As well as ocean going tankers discharging at the piers there is a pipe line 58 miles in length from the Ineos Finnart Oil Terminal on Loch Long in the Firth of Clyde. Tankers discharge at Finnart Oil Terminal piers and the oil is stored in bulk. Then it is pumped through the pipe line to Grangemouth Refinery for refining. (AMcA)

The RV stops by the road as Rachel has an asthma attack.

They stop for supplies at a store in Newark, New Jersey. The base exchange, Camp Road, RAF Upper Heyford Airfield, Oxfordshire, The area has been redeveloped for housing. Miller Close now stands on the site of the store. The interior of the store was filmed in the disused Kwik Save, Paisley Road West, Glasgow.

They leave the store to find that the RV has gone. The Base Exchange, Upper Heyford Airfield. The store was on the corner of Camp Road and Dacey Drive. The location now would be facing west behind the houses on what is now Miller Close. Other disused buildings at RAF Upper Heyford were seen in 'Children of Men'.

The family seek refuge in an apartment block while they await rescue. Ashenden, Deacon Way, Heygate Estate, Southwark, London SE17. The flats were demolished in 2014 and the area has now been redeveloped. The flats were parallel to New Kent Road and this view is facing east.

Gerry and his family are flown to the U.N. Command Ship U.S.S. Argus, 200 miles east of New York in the Atlantic Ocean. Not as it appears. This is the RFA Argus and was actually filmed in Falmouth Docks, Cornwall.

Zombies attack Gerry and his team as they arrive at Camp Humphreys military base in South Korea. Dunsfold Aerodrome, Cranleigh, Surrey, facing south-east. The Lockhead C-130 was actually an Antonov AN-12BK with USAF markings.

The soldiers pick off the attacking zombies, referred to as "Zeke". Dunsfold Aerodrome. The plane appears to be on the central runway.

Gerry and his SEAL escort enter the military base. RAF Upper Heyford, with hardened aircraft shelters in the background. Most likely the fenced off area on the east side of the airfield, which would make it the same location seen in 'Wonder Woman'. The camp interior was filmed at Hanningfield Water Treatment Works, Essex.

Unable to discover the source of the virus Gerry and his team cycle back to the runway. Avionics Maintenance Facility, Building 299, Upper Heyford Airfield.

Gerry is taken to the office of Jurgen Warmbrunn, high-ranking official in the Mossad. Triq Il-Qalb Imqaddsa, (opposite Triq il-Ballut), San Giljan, Malta.

Gerry is put under the protection of IDF Lieutenant Segen (Daniella Kertesz). Segen is Hebrew for Lieutenant. Zammit Clapp Hospital, Triq Reggie Miller, San Giljan, Malta.

Gerry and the soldiers run along a narrow street as zombies throw themselves down from the tops of the buildings. St. Anne's, between Old Bakery Street and Gendus, Valletta.

They turn left again and ascend the steps of the next street along. Gendus, at the end of St. Dominic Street.

The soldiers stop a passenger plane. The shorter runway at Malta International Airport. The Belarus Airways plane was actually a Portuguese Airbus A310-304.

After the plane crashes en route to Cardiff Airport, Gerry awakes in his seat, strapped in amongst the wreckage. Swinley Forest, Crowthorne, Berkshire.

Gerry and Segen make their way to the W.H.O. Research Facility. The building has been added top left. Gerry and Segen are seen bottom left on Summerhill, Blaenau Ffestiniog, Gwynedd, Wales.

Gerry and Segen make their way through deserted streets. Bradenham Road, Hayes. Greater London. Viewed from outside number 41. Graham Hopkins lived in Bradenham Road from 1965 until 1983. It was still his family home until 2020. From his parents' home they had a 180 degree view of Bradenham Road and could see all the action on the day of filming. Early evening on that day he received a phone call from his mum to tell him what was happening in the road and how they had seen them set up the props. She told him, when looking out the window, that a big car stopped outside the front door and the passenger door opened. When she asked the chap if he was in this film his reply was, "yes I sure am". Little did she know at the time that it was Brad Pitt.

Returning to the location on a wintery morning, Antony Blair took this comparison from ground level.

They arrive at the W.H.O. Research Facility. The South Building and Central Building at Hayes Park in Hayes, Greater London. with the digitally added sky bridge connecting the "Main Building" to "B-Wing".

The scene today by Antony Blair who adds that this is the former H. J. Heinz Company's UK headquarters dating from the early 1960s.

Gerry collapses at the entrance to the building. The South Building, Hayes Park, with false gates. The offices and laboratories of Discovery Park, Sandwich, Kent, were used for the interior. Graham Hopkins worked at H J Heinz in the late 1980s. It was 5 minutes walk from his home in Bradenham Road. In the film it shows one building via CGI . Graham tells us that there are 2 buildings and they're both 3 storeys high, but you can only see 2 as the lower one is just below ground level, linked via a tunnel. (The biggest one was the main offices, the small one on the right hand side was the experimental kitchen and laboratory). This was Mrs Heinz favourite building and she would stay here when in the UK. This building is the only one in the UK of this design and is easily recognised and is Grade 2 listed. Trivia.. there was at that time "57" ceiling spotlights in the reception area.

After discovering a weakness in the zombies, Gerry and Segen leave the facility. Facing away from the South Building, Hayes Park. towards the digitally added Welsh mountains.

Gerry's family wait for him on the beach. The steps behind the platform lead up to the South West Coastal Path.

The platform was added for filming but the wooden steps were lost due to erosion.

Gerry sees his family. This side of Lulworth Cove was also seen in 'Five On a Treasure Island'.

The Famous Five were here in those carefree days before viruses and zombies took over the world.

Whole cities are lost to the zombies. St Mark's Square, Venice. Italy.

The World Health Organisation develops a vaccine derived from deadly pathogens to act as a camouflage against the zombies. W.H.O. offices, United Nations Avenue, Ermita, Manila, Philippines. The building was renovated in 2011.

Gerry is brought ashore in a dinghy. Lulworth Cove was also seen in 'The Black Rider', 'The Boys in Blue', 'The Flaw', 'Four Sided Triangle', 'Nuts in May' and 'Out of Season'.

I didn't see any dinghies but I did see a few yachts.

"Be prepared for anything, our war has just begun!". Lulworth Cove.
