In his haste Jamie nearly bumps into a passerby. The railings of Paddington Station, Eastbourne Terrace also seen in ‘The 14’. There is no chance of a "now" shot until "Crossrail" and other improvement are completed. How long is a piece of string?

That string fortunately and eventually is finite. However I should be further back really for this one as this is roughly where the end of the glass canopy was. SJ

To catch the Torbay Express on his way to his uncle’s farm. Coryton’s Cove, Dawlish. James Churcher advises that the train formation has just emerged from Coryton Tunnel soon to disappear again into Robin Hood Tunnel that will be followed very soon after by Parsons Tunnel the last before Teignmouth. The locomotive is either a Collett designed King or single chinned Castle class 4-6-0 Express passenger locomotive. Unfortunately there is insufficient light on the leading bogie of the engine nor is the number visible on the smoke box door as the 3 digit train description number is obscuring it! The "130" signifies it to be the Cornish Riviera limited but without headboard display. James opts for it as a "Castle".

Arriving in Devon Jamie looks down on his uncle’s property that appears to be matted into, at present, an unidentified bay. See Header Section. Chris Bracey believes this to be the South west coast path between Prawle Point and the Start Point light House that he is convinced is in the far distance of the capture. To narrow it down further he thinks it’s very near Lannacombe bay. Like other observers Chris has never seen a house like that one in South Devon.

He approaches the farm gate . . . . Residents of Ashburton are unable to identify this and believe that it was elsewhere.

. . . . and then the cottage only to find his uncle is not at home, immediately. This form of construction is not considered to be normal for the Ashburton immediate area and may therefore be elsewhere.

Having repaired his uncle’s car he drives off to the village. Could this also be elsewhere from Ashburton? Chris Bracey suggests that this is a lane to Old Cotmore Farm near Beesands. It would seem that two lanes lead to the farm, but on balance we agree that it could be that to Appletree Cottage although both may have been used in overall filming.

He secures a job at the local garage, ‘Tillingham’s', where carries out a very small repair . . . . East Street, Ashburton in Devon. Anne tells us that the location at the time of filming was the fire station.

The car added more to the capture than the white van to this shot.

The Golden Lion Hotel is now a private residence.

The local bobby visits the garage owner Tillingham (Wensley Pithey) to enquire about the new boy in town. East Street, Ashburton in Devon.

Anne provides an up to date shot of a little changed scene.

According to Anne's picture dreaded double yellow lines have even reached Ashburton.

Uncle Kit (Patrick Holt) takes his pigs to market. The Market was on the south side of Vealenia Terrace, now developed into blocks of flats. However, fortunately, a Google Earth View 2011 is still available, occasionally, amongst their more update visits. For the sake of the record additional Google shots can be seen via a link in the Header Section.

A telegram arrives for Jamie telling him that his wife is arriving by train. East Street, Ashburton.

Rather different on a wet Sunday.

Jamie rushes to meet the train. Chris and James Churcher advise that this is the single platform at Staverton looking towards the level crossing gates, cattle dock and goods yard. The train is hauled by a Collett designed 14xx auto tank arriving from the Totnes direction.

Known as 'Welford' in the film, Staverton Station is now part of the South Devon Railway as supported by this shot from Chris and James Churcher following their recent visit.

He sees Linda (Elizabeth Sellars) alight from the train. Staverton station, which can also be seen in 'Where There's a Will' and 'Five Go Mad in Dorset'.

Chris and James provide the now shot of the Totnes end of the platform opposite the cattle dock and with the goods sidings in the background.

With the booking office and main station entrance behind him Jamie stares, unhappy and uneasy at her at her arrival. Staverton Station.

Anne shows that all the properties have been cared for but now it is one way traffic control.

Linda makes Kit aware of “how beautiful it is”. Clive T advises that they look out to Great Mew Stone, an island off Wembury, South Devon, also seen in 'The Devil's Pass'.

It is the day of the agricultural fair. Almost certainly the Devon Show . . . but which show ground? Chris Walpole sends us a cutting from 'The Okehampton Post' dated 18th March 1950 about the filming, that tells us that it was the Okehampton Show, a one day event that takes place every year. Having spent the night with Betty, Jamie returns to Linda, they have a blazing row and whilst defending herself strikes him with a candle stick. Distraught, she runs to the shoreline. Unidentified location, see Header Section.

But tongues are already wagging so they decide to keep separate whilst in town and meet up at the same spot to return home. North Street with Medieval Archway in the background. Immediately behind the car can be seen the granite base of a lantern that was the original Bull Ring, now removed, but leaving the junction with its name.

Anne confirms that the granite base has indeed gone.

Together with this shot Anne tells us that it was indeed the police station at the time of filming.

Seeing a set of candlesticks in a window Linda thinks that she sees Jamie disappear down a passageway opposite and follows. North Street, Ashburton.

She exits the other end but there is no sign of “him”. However, she appears to exit in Kingsbridge Lane.

Pete Webb has resolved the mystery for me and provided this comparative shot. The required part of Kingsbridge Lane no longer exists. Some of the houses were demolished in the 1970s to extend the car park.

And is startled seeing a man reading a newspaper with the headline “Man Found Murdered”. The house with the bay window survives as does Bridge House to the right and out of shot.

Linda hurries away through a gated archway and is followed by the man. Anne Bligh advises that the archway and gate were to the Pannier Market and has since been demolished to make way for a car park and housing development. Bridge House can be seen centre right of the street lamp. Kingsbridge Lane.

Anne, or was it KS, who took this shot revealing the whole of Bridge House since the loss of the Pannier Market entrance.

She finds herself in a graveyard and looks back. Confirmed by Anne as St. Andrews Churchyard.

KS, for this shot renamed NS (Nimble Spouse), had to squeeze into a disused part of the churchyard to obtain this for us. Thank you, and well worth the effort.

Anne provides an up to date shot revealing a few subtle changes having taken place.

Hastening her pace she seeks sanctuary in the Church.

Anne was not able to gain entry to the Church on this occasion but has every intention of capturing the interior on another visit.

Once inside Linda gathers her thoughts but makes a quick exit when the vicar appears. Whilst we do not usually include interiors this is clearly not a set and the Church has a long and interesting history.

A further comparative shot taken by Pete Webb who chose, despite wishing to be exact, did not to raise the font lid leaving us to appreciate the full architectural worth.

Following the unexpected arrival of Kit and Jamie’s mother Eva (Avice Landone), Linda has a nightmare and falls down stairs and the doctor is called. The next morning the police arrive, Detective (Willoughby Gray) and two officers. No spoilers!
