Intensifying the drama, there are many location shots in the final part (13), that together, are substantially more than required in our customary film capture listing and should not be overlooked. Further, as a result of the changes that have occurred in that area of London, together with the fact that the majority of the action takes place away from identifiably named areas, I thought it appropriate to support the various locations used with more helpful additional material particularly with a view to assisting the taking of comparative shots. The extracted Captures, that include those in the main film listing, can be viewed on the prepared pdf here.
For the purposes of clarity, support detail with regard to Captures 49 and 50 can be viewed here.
For the purposes of clarity, support detail with regard to Capture 51 can be viewed here.
Can you help:
If you have any information regarding this production, the locations or, even better, some comparison shots please contact us. Images submitted must be in Landscape orientation, as would be seen on the cinema screen, not Portrait.
We are aware that there are films on the site that were added when the criteria for the inclusion of locations was very different from today and, as a result, there may be scenes missing from some productions. Please do not forward additional screen captures to us but bring the detail to our attention, for we do, and are, 're-addressing' these older entries as time allows.
- Capture 1
- 'Now' required

Minister Grierson (Donald Morley) accompanied by Richard Bolt (Richard Leech) in a chauffeur driven Rolls Royce are followed by security support. Jamie Sturgeon identifies the junction of the A327 and Coopers Hill at Eversley in Hampshire. Ron Glenister confirms this location.
- Capture 2
- 'Now' required

And drive along an unknown wooded country lane. Ron Glenister places this, like Capture 4, as the B3016 looking north east towards its junction with the A327.
- Capture 3
- 'Now' required

A three wheel Scammell Townsman railway transport vehicle joins the scene. Keeping his eye on the Scammell. Ron places it as between the junction where Up Green joins Up Green and the start of Chequers Lane and the junction of where Cooper's Hill meets Up Green and continues as Cooper's Hill. The building far left remains, just, as part of the land of '.....een Cottage'.
- Capture 4
- 'Now' required

Meanwhile the security van with a police escort is viewed approaching the films ‘West Marsh, Kent’ airport. Ron Glenister places this, like Capture 2, as the B3016 looking north east towards its junction with the A327.
- Capture 5
- 'Now' required

The Rolls gets ever nearer. Ron finds this location is a few frames before Capture 3 and therefore has the same complicated location description.
- Capture 6
- 'Now' required

At a junction where they turn left the railway lorry awaits to follow them. Frustrating that none of the signpost names are legible. Cooper's Hill with Up Green entering from the right says Ron.
- Capture 7
- 'Now' required

The group pass a public house before Grierson and Bolt turn off the road . . . Jamie Sturgeon found Vigo Lane in Yateley, Hampshire with the sign for the Anchor Inn in the distance.
- Capture 8

. . . . whilst the lorry remains. Vigo Lane, Yateley, almost adjacent to Blackbushe Airport, located by Jamie Sturgeon.
- Capture 9
- 'Now' required

The security van and escort turn off the road to a track.
- Capture 10
- 'Now' required

The lorry parks elsewhere. Unknown location, could this be associated with a local gravel pit? Well yes, Ron Glenister has provided convincing evidence to find what is now a scrap metal yard on Vigo Lane, Yateley, GU46 6ED and 'what3words' : goats.immune.channel
- Capture 11
- 'Now' required

The security group near the films 'West Marsh' airport in Kent. In reality Blackbushe Airport, Hampshire. Looking South East from what is now the perimeter road at +/- 'what3words' discloses.flight.sailed. These two hangars were built post circa 1962 and filming in 1969. Ron Glenister wishes this recorded as 'teamwork'.
- Capture 12
- 'Now' required

The Minister and the security support car are allowed through an outer security gate. The background hangars the 'temporary lock-up hangars' built circa 1961/62. A series of Dragonfly helicopters can be seen. Viewed from circa 'what3words' - going.expired.freely Another 'teamwork' identification.
- Capture 13
- 'Now' required

Grierson and Bolt arrive at the main gates and proceed to park up near the security group. I don't believe that Blackbushe ever had such a security entrance. Tony Leighton provides evidence to support this to being the entrance, at the time of filming, to Northolt Airport on the A40 Western Avenue, London HA4. Entrance now closed. This provides added support to the identifcation of the following capture.
- Capture 14
- 'Now' required

The airport tower where we see instructions for landing being issued. Both Anthony Papaleontiou and Tony Leighton provide evidence to identify this as Northolt Airport, London HA4, later to be superseded and demolished.
- Capture 15
- 'Now' required

Meanwhile Freddy Lamb (Roy Dotrice) is parking his VW golf. Unknown location.
- Capture 16
- 'Now' required

- Capture 19
- 'Now' required

The plane makes its way to the spot where the two groups await, to meet off the plane, Colonel Kipitu (Michael McKay) Tinisha Minister for Interior Affairs together with his wife, to collect the bullion. I have not been able to establish the exact airport location but I am of the opinion that it is the north west corner where previous action takes place.
- Capture 20
- 'Now' required

A single shot from an upstairs room, the Jaguar bursts into flames and the gang pounce on the gold and the police.
- Capture 21
- 'Now' required

- 'Now' required

Having touched the nerve center of Derek Hartford, Cradock drives to London to follow up on Hartford’s background, meanwhile, Hartford is in a nearby telephone box arranging a ‘dental appointment’ in London.
- Capture 29
- 'Now' required

Feeling threatened by Cradock and admitting to his wife that he was involved, Hartford resigns his job with the intention of moving to Australia. Unknown location.

Looking west towards the Hounslow Road bridge, with Feltham station visible through the arch, and the concrete footbridge in Bedfont Lane off in the distance.
- Capture 33
- 'Now' required

Further location detail. The same as the previous Capture but the camera is now under the Harlington Road East bridge. (AF)

- 'Now' required

……and passes Reverend Lawrence (Keith Grenville) at the entrance.
- Capture 43
- 19 Jan 2026

Arrangements are made to ‘spring’ Tyzack from prison, the escape van is to be parked here. Tench Street, London E1, a similar view can be seen in ‘The Alf Garnett Saga’ and ‘I Was a Fireman’, while the distant bend appears in ‘To Sir with Love’ and through the adjacent gate is a location from ‘Murder in Reverse?’

Now ideal for secluded parking.
- Capture 44
- 'Now' required

A rope ladder is be thrown over the wall, very close to a buttress on the other side. Unidentified location.
- Capture 45
- 19 Jan 2026

The appointed hour is approaching. St. John of Wapping Church, Scandrett Street, E1. Clock also seen in ‘Fires Were Started’.

Tree growth has rather dictated where a worthwile shot can be taken.
- Capture 46
- 19 Jan 2026

The escape van makes its way. Commercial Road, London E1 looking across to Ratcliffe Cross Street, London E1. In reality, going in the wrong direction.

The background reveals the growth of London.
- Capture 47
- 19 Jan 2026

Panning left. Looking east along Commercial Road with Belgrave Street going off to the left.

And looking this way reveals the growth of London's Docklands.
- Capture 48
- 19 Jan 2026

Whilst escape procedures are followed at the prison Tyzack finds himself in a kitchen waste bin to be loaded onto a waiting refuse van. Ivory House, St Katharine Dock posing as the prison.

A closer view of London's growth is similarly revealed in the background here.
- Capture 49
- 19 Jan 2026

The remaining inmates exit the yard….. SE corner of St Katharine Dock Basin. The precise location can be viewed via the link in the Header Section.

Just one loan prisoner remains these days.
- Capture 50
- 19 Jan 2026

….as does the refuse van….. SE corner of St Katharine Dock Basin. The precise location can be viewed via the link in the Header Section.

I clearly missed 'dustbin day'.
- Capture 51
- 19 Jan 2026

….and finally, ‘on the other side’ as it leaves the gate south onto St. Katharine’s Way. The precise location can be viewed via the link in the Header Section. A very similar scene can be seen in 'No Road Back' Capture 4.

An essence of control remains over entrance and exit.
- Capture 52
- 'Now' required

After Tyzack has been ‘worked on’ by Slade’s (Peter Cellier) men arrangements are made for his wife Mary to meet him. Unidentified location of this rather distinguishable lychgate.
- Capture 53
- 'Now' required

A car is waiting for her and they drive off to where Slade is hiding him.
- Capture 54
- 'Now' required

Watched by WPC Sutton (Auriol Smith).
- Capture 55
- 'Now' required

Tyzack manages to escape but Slade still holds his wife. However, as Slade becomes aware that Cradock has a growing interest in him he releases Mary. As she approaches her house Chuck Nelson (Terence Rigby) has been given the keys to a white van. Unknown location.
- Capture 56
- 'Now' required

He even reverses over her.
- Capture 57
- 'Now' required

Meanwhile Tyzack is staggering his way home but stops off at the local church….
- Capture 58
- 'Now' required

….where under cover of darkness, he digs up his share of the robbery, only to be stopped by the police having been seen earlier by the Reverend Lawrence (Keith Grenville).
- Capture 59
- 'Now' required

Later the white van is found, burnt out, near a railway line with the charred body of Slade and his men. Unknown location.
- Capture 60
- 'Now' required

The Bristol Freighter supposedly lands at ‘Basle-Mulhouse’ airport, France where the pilot Peter Conroy (Geoffrey Whitehead) disembarks to his awaiting Lancia Flaminia GT. Most likely to be Blackbushe Airport.

- 'Now' required

From where it is suggested that he drives into Austria. Background premises?
- Capture 62
- 'Now' required

Arrangements are made for Peter to telephone his wife Stephanie (Jennifer Hilary) at a call box near to her home. Now identified by AF as Stonebridge Park, near Wembley, at the point where the A406 North Circular Road passes under the West Coast Main Line. This is looking towards Neasden, with the road to the left.
- Capture 63
- 'Now' required

As she leaves the box her position is reported upon.
- Capture 64
- 'Now' required

Cradock persuades Stephanie to meet with Peter in Austria and lure him into a country where there is an Extradition Treaty, Switzerland fits the bill. Unidentified location.
- Capture 65
- 'Now' required

As Cradock steps forward for the arrest Peter makes a run for it back to the films Austrian border.
- Capture 66
- 'Now' required

So near and yet so far. Does this distinctive location near a railway line help?
- Capture 67
- 'Now' required

Tom Goodwin (Ian Hendry) is found to have been the pilot of the Bristol Freighter involved in the robbery and is now in London, on his honeymoon, having just married Dee Latter (Wanda Ventham) and having just purchased a riverside hotel in Maidenhead. Ron Glenister has found the very place, 'Bray Lodge', Fishery Road, Maidenhead, Berkshire.
- Capture 68
- 'Now' required

It’s not long before Craddock arrives at their hotel. 'Bray Lodge', Fishery Road, Maidenhead, Berkshire, looking north to the neighbouring property as established by Ron Glenister (RG).
- Capture 69
- 'Now' required

As he pulls up Tom and Dee leave the veranda. 'Bray Lodge', Fishery Road, Maidenhead, Berkshire. (RG)

- Capture 78
- 'Now' required

Arrangements are made for him to escape under cover of darkness. Unknown location.
- Capture 79
- 'Now' required

D.S. Thomas drives off having taken Cradock to visit Eddie Makin’s mother ‘The Dowager’ (Eileen Way), all watched by Tilt (Donald Webster). Unknown location.
- Capture 80
- 'Now' required

Hon. Timothy Fry (Patrick Allen) is visited in Spain by Terry Lardner (John Bindon) who is owed £450, and a suspect for another case, agrees to fly to London to collect Lardner’s wife and child. Presumably London Airport.
- Capture 81
- 05 Aug 2026

Tim goes to visit Effie ‘Lardner’ (Patricia Clapton). With sincere thanks to Ron Glenister for providing me with a, or maybe THE, vital clue to resolving this location. The South Acton Estate (Now known as 'Acton Gardens', London W3 here looking across to 'Meredith Tower' and the houses in Osborne Road from outside the rear of ‘Chesterton Court’ on Bollo Bridge Road. The service road seen here is now Whelan Road and ‘Hopkins Court’ with the footprint of ‘Chesterton Court’ set with gym equipment.

For some reason, Keith Prested has for a while been interested in locating 'Effie's' flat. Fortunately for us, now found, despite her being 'long gone' he still felt the need to visit and take a series of shots for us. With the passage of time and despite the tree obscuring the scene, the building in the background that has replaced Meredith Tower is he believes known as Dickinson Court in the northern part and Hopkins Court in the southern part. The mentioned gym equipment can be seen in the foreground.
- Capture 82
- 05 Aug 2026

The taxi pulls up at the entrance to her apartment block. Panning left to the entrance of 'Meredith Tower'. This whole Estate was redeveloped circa 2016 and the view is now essentially 9 to 17 Whelan Road, ‘Hopkins Court’, W3.

Keith clarifies the location now, "the entrance to Hopkins Court with Whelan Road in frant".
- Capture 83
- 'Now' required

Tim borrows a car from Val (Maria Aitken) to go to Rye, Sussex to visit an old pal, ‘Fishy’ (Harold Goodwin). Rye from the River Rother looking towards what was 'Skinners' garage, now redeveloped, but the roundabout retains such a name.
- Capture 84
- 'Now' required

Having driven along he parks up to ‘arrange for ’Fishy’ to take “two people across to France”. Rye town viewed from Rye Harbour and the River Rother.
- Capture 85
- 05 Aug 2026

Attention returns to Effie’s block of flats. 'Meredith Tower' on the South Acton Estate (Now known as Acton Gardens) with the rear of ‘Chesterton Court’ on Bollo Bridge Road coming into view on the left. Subsequent to redevelopment, looking south across ‘West Park’ to ‘Hopkins Court’, Whelan Road and Bollo Bridge Road with the gym equipment out of shot to the left.

Once again, Keith is able to clarify; "Dickinson Court/Hopkins Court with Whelan Road in front and Bollo Bridge Road in the distance".
- Capture 86
- 05 Aug 2026

Where the police are keeping watch. Panning left from the previous capture, looking south down Hanbury Road, over Bollo Bridge Road and on to Shaftesbury Road. Part of 'Grahame Tower' can be seen far left. The tall building to its right, what was the ‘Victoria’ public house at 204 Bollo Bridge Road hides the building seen in the following capture. Hanbury Road has been moved slightly to the east with the passage of the old road now forming a footpath in ‘West Park’.

A far less barren scene captured by Keith showing the footpath in West Park with the new route of Hanbury Road just visible left of frame.
- Capture 87
- 05 Aug 2026

And Tim is watching too, and has seen two men enter the flat. 173 to 177 Bollo Bridge Road with part of the ‘Bollo Bridge Road Day Nursery’ to the left and 179 just beginning to appear on the right where in the frames that follow Timothy sits with binoculars. The properties have now been replaced with an industrial unit but the pavement and road junction curbs to Shaftesbury Road remain.

Keith Prested captured the industrial building which has replaced 173 to 177 Bollo Bridge Road and despite now being unable to find any evidence of Shaftesbury Road took this from exactly the correct spot.
- Capture 88
- 05 Aug 2026

Cradock arrives to park behind the police car. Looking westwards along Bollo Bridge Road as the police car turns left into Hanbury Road. Hanbury Road is now a few meters further east.

Given the slight changes here Keith took this shot of the new Hanbury Road with Bollo Bridge Road junction.
- Capture 89
- 05 Aug 2026

Tim drives off with Effie and the baby…..and the dog! Osborne Road looking across Bollo Lane to industrial units that remain to this day.

Osborne Road looking across Bollo Lane with the surviving industrial buildings in the background. Keith ends the day giving us all a smile, "The sign says 'Smallbills Garage Ltd' which in my experience would be a very nice change!"
- Capture 90
- 26 Feb 2026

Tim’s hire car is seen in Rye, Sussex so Cradock and Thomas ‘hot foot it’ there. Rye Road (A268) with Coldharbour Lane out of shot to the right.

Keith Prested used a 'passing opportunity' to capture some comparative shots for us. Despite the intervening 57 years Keith found the house is still there and the hedge on the left somewhat neater.
- Capture 91
- 26 Feb 2026

Soon to pass a signpost. Rye Road with Coldharbour Lane off to the right with what is now 'Virginia Cottage' in the background. Whether the signpost was a prop or not is open to question as the sad remnants of a signpost visible in 2009 GEV is less fulsome.

'Virginia Cottage' Keith found is now mostly obscured by shrubbery, but with added solar panels on the roof and the signpost replaced by dustbins.
- Capture 92
- 'Now' required

Cradock learns that the car with a woman and a dog are actually on their way to Lydd Airport. Rye Road travelling east having just passed 'Round Chimney' to the left.
- Capture 93
- 26 Feb 2026

They speed over a bridge. Rye town as viewed from New Road bridge.

Fewer boats these days and a lot of work has obviously been done to the right hand bank of the river, indeed Keith, thanks for update.
- Capture 94
- 26 Feb 2026

Back to the open road to turn off to Lydd airport. New Road, Rye bridge looking west with 'Skinners' garage in the background. Still 'Skinners' but now a car showroom.

Keith's shot confirms that 'Skinners' remain, but has the concrete post been replaced or just flattened off?
- Capture 95
- 'Now' required

Getting ever closer. Unidentified location.
- Capture 96
- 'Now' required

And where Tim is taking provisions to his plane, an Auster J/1N Alpha registration G-AJAE. Quite likely to be Lydd airport as it was independently photographed there in 1969.
- Capture 97
- 'Now' required

Cradock travels the approach road. Unidentified roadway.
- Capture 98
- 04 Nov 2026

Meanwhile back in Rye we see ‘Fishy’ taking his boat out of harbour with Effie, the baby and the dog on board. Presumably the River Rother approaching the sea prior to the following capture.

Keith Prested confirms that it is indeed the River Rother at Rye Harbour and provides this comparative shot at very low tide.
- Capture 99
- 04 Nov 2026

Baby Nigel is being sick! Continuity would suggest the River Rother further approaching the sea.

The River Rother again says Keith, here looking out to sea in overcast conditions and at very low tide. The building on the far side looks recognisable.
- Capture 100
- 22 Jan 2026

Mr Day (Blake Butler), a solicitor, who has passed information to the police, is followed up a staircase at Hanwell station, Campbell Road, London W7.

77 years later, Antony Blair climbed the same staircase leading up to platform 2.

Cradock makes his way…… As found for the next capture, to 'Red Lodge', Coursers Road, Colney Heath, Herts. It was the white silo's that gave it away to Geoff, no, I can't see them either, but he says they are part of the Severn Trent site and are now green. He will try and re-visit in the winter months when perhaps there is a better opportunity of comparative shot.
- Capture 106
- 28 Sep 2026

…….to…… Geoff Dodd identifies this as 'Red Lodge', Coursers Road, Colney Heath, Herts., the entrance to which he says has been moved.

Geoff, respectful of the clear security warnings took this shot from a reasonable distance.
- Capture 107
- 28 Sep 2026

……the home of Richard Bolt with whom he is staying. Salisbury Hall, St. Albans, Herts. The history of Salisbury Hall expounded in the film is all true.

Geoff Dodd did his best to replicate the shot from ground level with, as so often happens, the sun directly in line with ther lens.
- Capture 108
- 28 Sep 2026

“Nell Gwynne held a baby out over the moat here and told the King that she would drop him in if he didn’t name him on the spot”. Salisbury Hall.

Geoff Dodd did a very good job capturing this shot without trespass and without triggering security.
- Capture 109

Arlene Makin (Coral Atkins)……Northern end of Steele Road, London NW10 looking south.

Keith Prested visited Steele Road for us, found that all was very much the same and is able to confirm that a barrier, albeit different, remains.
- Capture 111
- 16 Mar 2026

…..is found dead. The northern end of Steele Road by the River Brent looking east.

Fortunately for Keith, there was no dead body, only joggers on the Grand Union Canal (Paddington Branch) towpath. The building in the background is a survivor.

Dillo is called for a pick up at the “north end of Greenwich foot tunnel” exiting Barque Street, London SE8 looking east along Saunders Ness Road. Now part of St. Luke's Primary School Front football pitch bordered by Douglas Path and Saunders Ness Road.

Barque Street has totally disappeared in favour of a foorball pitch but this is the location as it is now.

…he turns right into Saunders Ness Road.

Parking remains much the same but with the addition of 'Boris Bikes'.

…where he picks up George Nechros. Saunders Ness Road with the Greenwich Foot Tunnel entrance in the background.

Taking him to the films ‘The Duke of Clarence’ public house. Actually, 'The Angel', 101 Bermondsey Wall East, SE16 and Cathay Street off to the right.

A much smarter pub these days benefiting from quasi pedestrianisation.

And parks up. It is no longer possible to park there now, well not a car anyway.

That space has now been given over to designer shrubbery forming part of the al fresco drinking and eating area.

Cradock and backup arrive at the pub, only to find Dillo dead. Bermondsey Wall East, with Cathay Street off to the right once again.

With an awaiting car outside the ‘Town of Ramsgate’ Wapping High Street, E1 Also seen in 'Don't Open till Christmas' and 'Emile'.

A still camera doesn't quite have the same perspective as the film camera, but the foreground remains virtually unchanged. I'll drink to that!

Their escape route takes them over the swing bridge at the entrance to Wapping Basin and Western Dock on Wapping High Street, looking west.

What would Bogey have said? Something like, pethaps "of all the free roads in Wapping, they park their large white vehicle just where I don't want it".

But a waiting police car forces them to turn sharply into Hermitage Wall on the right.

Save for the Pier Head properties to the extreme left everything else is new build.
